I think most of you probably know what I\u2019m talking about.<\/p>\n<p>I know fellow-Patheos blogger, UU minister and Wiccan priestess, <span class=\"author vcard\"><span class=\"fn\">Rev. Catharine Clarenbach<\/span><\/span> knows what I am talking about.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/naturespath\/2016\/04\/whats-possible-pagans\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">She wrote recently about the contrast between the her own Pagan practice and some CUUPS rituals she had attended<\/a>, which she describes as \u201ctepid at best, and disorganized and appropriative at worst\u201d, and which, she says, don\u2019t get any more powerful than \u201cwriting wishes on flash paper and lighting them from the chalice or, at best, an eight-inch cauldron\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just CUUPS though (and to be fair, there are some CUUPS groups that are delving deeper \u2014 John Beckett appears to be doing amazing ritual work in Denton CUUPS).\u00a0 I find this mediocrity to be endemic to public Pagan rituals large or small.<\/p>\n<p>For a long while, I have believed that this was due to a lack of training and education in ritual planning and execution. \u00a0And that\u2019s definitely part of it.<\/p>\n<p>But increasingly, I\u2019m thinking that there is another factor at play \u2026 laziness.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I don\u2019t consider myself a great ritual facilitator by any measure.\u00a0 But I have <em>never<\/em> half-assed a ritual.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s some signs you may be half-assing a ritual:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>A circle is cast and the quarters are called, but the space does not feel sacred.<\/strong> \u00a0If the quartered circle thing isn\u2019t creating a sense of sacredness, why are you doing it? \u00a0There\u2019s dozens of ways to create sacred space and time. \u00a0You don\u2019t need to cast a circle or call the quarters. \u00a0Find something that works.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The \u201chighlight\u201d or focus of the ritual is someone walking around the circle giving a homily on the symbolic meaning of the Sabbat.<\/strong> \u00a0What are we, Protestants? \u00a0Do we really come to Pagan sabbats to hear a sermon? \u00a0When it comes to words in ritual, usually less is more. \u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0<em>tell<\/em> me the meaning of the sabbat \u2014\u00a0<em>show\u00a0<\/em>me! \u00a0 Better yet, help me show myself. \u00a0Pagan ritual should not be a spectator sport.\u00a0 Crafting this kind of ritual isn\u2019t easy, but it\u2019s worth the investment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There is no connection with the immediate environment.<\/strong> \u00a0For gods\u2019 sake,\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0invoke the element of\u00a0\u201cwater\u201d in the west\u00a0if\u00a0there is a large body of real water to the east of you. \u00a0 Take the time to get to know the place where the ritual will be held. \u00a0Gather plants, fruits, and rocks from your immediate area for an altar or ritual focus. \u00a0And check the weather. \u00a0If\u00a0there is a powerful thunderstorm rolling in, don\u2019t ignore it or treat it like an inconvenience. \u00a0Make it part of the ritual.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There is chitchat and casual joking.<\/strong> \u00a0Humor which is part of the structure of the ritual is fine. \u00a0(The Feri Pagan Tent Revival at Pantheacon was awesome!)\u00a0 But too often humor is being used to cover for the embarrassment of a bad ritual. Your ritual doesn\u2019t have to be somber, but\u00a0if people are interrupting part of the ritual to interject unscripted jokes, they\u2019re being disrespectful.\u00a0 You shouldn\u2019t blame them though, because they\u2019re probably taking their cue from your own excessively casual attitude.\u00a0 Treat your ritual with respect and other people will reciprocate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People wander in late to the ritual.<\/strong> \u00a0It\u2019s another sign of disrespect. \u00a0It shows that people have low expectations \u2014 probably based on past experience. \u00a0If you put the time into planning the ritual, you should expect people to be on time. \u00a0Show that respect yourself by\u00a0starting at the scheduled time. \u00a0It\u2019s okay to have someone at the door to hold latecomers at bay. \u00a0They\u2019ll be on time next time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People are bumping into each other or are waiting in\u00a0a line to do something.<\/strong> \u00a0This shows you haven\u2019t thought about the logistics of moving people around. \u00a0People should be engaged in doing something at every point in the ritual, even if it is just consciously holding space. \u00a0Standing in lines is\u00a0the most meaningless of modern activities and has no place in ritual.\u00a0 (Don\u2019t confuse processing in a procession with waiting in line.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>The ritual facilitators seem lost. \u00a0<\/strong>Ritual has to be practiced. \u00a0People have rehearsals for weddings for a reason.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You\u2019re handing out disposable\u00a0ritual swag. \u00a0<\/strong>If you\u2019re going to have people make something as part of the ritual or if you\u2019re going to give them a token of some kind, make it meaningful.\u00a0 Find a way to invest it with meaning. \u00a0The last thing we need is more meaningless stuff that will end up in the garbage.\u00a0 And FYI, it\u2019s not <em>impossible<\/em> to invest kiddy crafts with meaning, but it\u2019s really hard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The central ritual act is burning a piece of paper with a wish on it.\u00a0 <\/strong>This is so overused!\u00a0 I admit I\u2019ve done variations of this in some rituals, but only if it makes a special kind of sense in that particular ritual.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it\u2019s become near universal in Pagan rituals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You start planning a week before the ritual.\u00a0 <\/strong>Self-explanatory.<strong><br>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The picture above is from the 1973 film\u00a0<em>The Wicker Man<\/em>. We can debate whether it is a good movie or bad movie (I think it\u2019s so bad it goes out the end, comes back around, and becomes good again).\u00a0 In any case, the ritual at the end is really good \u2014 well, you know, except for the homicide part. \u00a0Notice how none of the signs above are present in the procession or the finale. \u00a0No one wanders in late to the Wicker Man ritual!<\/p>\n<p>Listen up, fellow ritual planners.\u00a0 I know you\u2019ve conducted over dozens or even hundreds of Wheel of the Year rituals.\u00a0 And I know you feel very comfortable with your old standby formula, but it\u2019s killing us.<\/p>\n<p>All the time, more and more people are being drawn from Neo-Paganism to devotional forms of polytheism.\u00a0 And that\u2019s fine, but you have to wonder why people aren\u2019t finding their home in Neo-Paganism any longer.\u00a0 I think a big part of the\u00a0reason is that so many of our rituals just <em>suck<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no coincidence that people have started\u00a0referring to\u00a0Neo-Paganism\u00a0as\u00a0\u201cgeneric Paganism\u201d: Our rituals\u00a0fail to connect us to anything larger than ourselves, they fail to communicate\u00a0with our deeper selves, they they fail to awaken us to mystery and wonder, and they fail to inspire us to action.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s no surprise that people go looking elsewhere for what they need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Devotional polytheist rituals work because <a href=\"http:\/\/bansheearts.com\/ritual-theory-for-polytheists\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">they take themselves seriously and they strive to connect with something beyond themselves<\/a>.\u00a0 But ritual does not need to be devotional to do this.\u00a0 It need not even invoke deities to be powerful or transformative.\u00a0 But it <em>does<\/em> need to put us in connection with something bigger than ourselves \u2014 whether that be the Earth itself, the wider Cosmos, the community of more-than-human beings, our deeper Selves, or even just one another.\u00a0 Good ritual takes us out of our little isolated egos and expands our souls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>And you can\u2019t do that on the fly!\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Your lame quarter calls and your boring Mabon sermon from last year are just not going to get people there.<em><br>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let me suggest a radical idea: It\u2019s better to <em>not<\/em> do a ritual at all than do a <em>bad<\/em> ritual. \u00a0If it gets close to time for your Mabon ritual this year, and you don\u2019t really have time to plan the ritual, and you\u2019re tempted to half-ass it \u2026 just don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, start planning for your Samhain ritual for later this year. \u00a0Make it a kick-ass Samhain ritual. \u00a0And commit to doing a kick-ass Mabon ritual next year.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Good ritual takes us out of our little isolated egos and expands our souls.
