Citing an attempt to put \u201ca positive face on what many people believe to be an evil religion,\u201d the American Family Association led three Christian and Jewish students in filing a lawsuit<\/a> against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<\/a> for assigning incoming freshman of the Class of 2006 a book about the Qur\u2019an (Approaching the Qur\u2019an: The Early Revelations) as a reading assignment. \u201cThis was a book chosen in the wake of Sept. 11,\u201d said UNC Chancellor James Moeser. \u201cThis is a great opportunity to have a conversation<\/a> on the teachings of one of the world\u2019s great religions, how it\u2019s been used or misused, whether it\u2019s a religion of peace or not.\u201d The school is standing by its policy, saying that any student who wishes to opt out of the assignment may do so. \u201cWe are not in favor of the school\u2019s mandating the reading<\/a> of any religious document,\u201d says Stephen M. Crampton, chief counsel for the group. This includes the Bible, he added, although the group describes itself<\/a> as an organization that \u201cexists to motivate and equip citizens to change the culture to reflect Biblical truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
