The scene has played itself out many times in areas of unrest in the Muslim world. Muslim refugees huddle at some border seeking refuge or entry into a safe country, only to be held back and crowded into refugee camps. Muslims, in fact, make up the majority of registered refugees in the world today. But who would expect such a Muslim refugee camp to pop up<\/a> in the United States? It\u2019s happening now at various points along the US\/Canadian border<\/a>, as hundreds of Pakistani nationals seek asylum in Canada for fear<\/a> of being deported or arrested by the INS in the wake of an upcoming registration deadline on March 21st. The backlog isn\u2019t likely to let up soon, as Canadian officials<\/a> can only process 17 applicants per day. \u201cTurnout at registration has been low,\u201d says Faiz Rehman<\/a>, president of the Washington, DC-based National Council of Pakistani Americans. \u201cThe INS expected about 25,000 would show up. It\u2019s been more like 3,000 to 5,000.\u201d Instead of registering, many Pakistani immigrants have been fleeing to Canada<\/a>, even though many are here legally. \u201cPeople just don\u2019t want to risk going before the INS<\/a>,\u201d says Saad Ahmad, an immigration attorney in San Jose, Calif. \u201cThey think Canada is a more welcoming country.\u201d Some complain of being caught up<\/a> in INS red tape, such as college student Usman Ghani, whose family\u2019s green card process was stalled at the INS because the agency incorrectly believed<\/a> their sponsor, Usman\u2019s grandmother, was dead. No Muslims in the registration process have been accused of terror \u2013 only visa violations. But the fact that Muslims make up a small percentage of visa violators but are the only ones<\/a> being targetted hasn\u2019t been lost on the Pakistani immigrants. \u201cI love the US. I will love it for the rest of my life,\u201d says Ghani. \u201cBut just because I love it doesn\u2019t mean I feel safe in it anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
