It\u2019s a practice most of the Muslim world has left behind, but in the few places that allow \u201ctriple talaq<\/a>\u201d divorces \u2013 where the husband says \u201cI divorce you\u201d three times to legally dissolve the marriage \u2013 the practice is often abused. Stories of women receiving those three words in succession, whether verbally, written on paper, or even using SMS text messaging, are far too common. \u201d I was shocked,\u201d remarked<\/a> Nasreen, an Indian woman who abuse from her husband followed by a piece of paper with the word talaq<\/i> (divorce) written three times. \u201cMy first worry was shelter for my kids.\u201d (She has been fighting the move for six years with the help of a Muslim women\u2019s welfare organization.) Last week, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board drafted new divorce laws that seek to eliminate<\/a> indiscriminate annulment using \u201ctriple talaq\u201d, along with proposing to amend<\/a> land ownership laws to protect inheritance rights for Muslim women. \u201cTriple talaq is certainly not he best way to separate,\u201d explained board counsel Zafaryab Jilani, \u201cand that this clearly spelt out in the Qur\u2019an.\u201d \u201c[Triple talaq] is not part of Koranic law,\u201d argues Islamic scholar Dr. Zeenat Shaukat Ali. \u201cCountries like Pakistan, Turkey, Tunisia, and Indonesia shelved it<\/a> long ago.\u201d Muslim leaders hope to prescribe<\/a> alternative separation and divorce rules (the largest change being a \u201c waiting period<\/a>\u201d of three months), while also working towards gender equity<\/a> regardless of whether the husband or wife initiates the divorce. The board is working on a new nikahnaama<\/i> (marriage contract) that enshrines the new rules and that must be signed<\/a> by couples before marriage. However, the moves drew protests<\/a> from those who wish to preserve male privilege, as 80 dissenting scholars called for resistance to the new rules. \u201cIf the board goes ahead with the proposal then a nationwide agitation<\/a> is on the cards,\u201d said Syed Noori, who opposes the move.<\/p>\n
