Groundhogs don't talk, buddy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>If you have no idea what treble means, you\u2019re probably an American (and you might be Canadian). If you\u2019re thinking of music, you\u2019re not completely off base, or off pitch as it were. Treble, which refers to a high-pitched voice or instrument, does so because it \u201cwas the highest part in a three-part contrapuntal composition.\u201d If you don\u2019t know what a contrapuntal composition is, well, I probably lost ya at treble. (It means <em>triple<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t feel bad. Things like treble, and fortnights, and <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zebra_crossing\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">zebra crossings<\/a> (which are all over my city, as it happens), and maths, and the mythical letter \u2018Zed\u2019, were all new to me when I first lived in England a few years back. I feel like I can almost put on my CV that I speak English (Amercan <em>and<\/em> British); and with a few \u2018eh\u2019s and \u2018aboot\u2019s maybe Canadian too?<\/p>\n<p>But I digress.<\/p>\n<p>Stupid holiday? <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Groundhog_Day\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Groundhog Day<\/a>.<\/strong> Stupid funny, that is.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight I went to a very nice little meditation group that meets each week and after a perfectly lovely meditation, our leader, a brilliant Welsh\/British man, said that today is a \u2018special day.\u2019 And maybe Justin knows about this special day\u2026 (I was completely dumbfounded, trying to think of which <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a> holiday I had completely forgotten, even having just read Arun\u2019s list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.angryasianbuddhist.com\/2012\/01\/holiday-calendar-2012.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Buddhist holidays in 2012<\/a>)\u2026 because I am an <em>American<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Ding, ding, ding.<\/p>\n<p>My mind flashed to facebook, where friends in the US had been posting \u2018the results\u2019 and accompanying lamentations \u201c6 more weeks :(\u201d from Groundhog Day.<\/p>\n<p>Ah yes. I guessed it. Yay me. And on went the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Dharma<\/a> talk. Samsara metaphor, etc etc. (If you haven\u2019t seen the movie, do. The potential \u2018Buddhist\u2019 undertones are pretty strong.)<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Groundhog Day Trailer HD\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tSVeDx9fk60?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>(wow, makes you feel old if you saw it when it came out\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>In any case, this wonderful American holiday has made it even into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/football\/blog\/2012\/feb\/02\/groundhog-day-arsenal-goals?newsfeed=true\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">British football<\/a> (that\u2019s \u2018soccer\u2019) news, as well as in to Canada, in a big way. According to CP24, Toronto\u2019s breaking news channel, 2 out of Canada\u2019s 3 <del>hedgehog<\/del> groundhogs actually predicted <em>against <\/em>Punxsutawney Phil, who calls of six more weeks of winter.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are they exploiting American tradition for their own gain, Canadians are making a mockery of it by contradicting our nation\u2019s most famous weatherman.<\/p>\n<p>Deep breaths. Channeling the outrage.
