His post is titled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/huayanzang.blogspot.tw\/2012\/10\/why-is-tibetan-buddhism-more-popular.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Why is Tibetan Buddhism more popular?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see by my title, I\u2019m not so sure that it <em>is<\/em>, though I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if Tibetan Buddhism as a whole had more adherents in America than Theravadin or Zen. But the methodology of counting who\u2019s who gets tough. Do we count Seon and Ch\u2019an practitioners with the Zen? And do all of the \u2018mindfulness\u2019 practitioners, followers of Kornfield and Kabat-Zinn, somehow fit into Theravadin (some might self-affiliate with it, some might not). <strong>However, difficulties with methodology and categories shouldn\u2019t stand in the way of thoughtful discussion and fruitful research<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(I wrote about the broad issue of Buddhists in America recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/americanbuddhist\/2011\/07\/buddhists-in-america.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.) Jeffrey notes about a dozen reasons he thinks Tibetan Buddhism is most popular (I\u2019ll liberally paraphrase them \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/huayanzang.blogspot.tw\/2012\/10\/why-is-tibetan-buddhism-more-popular.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">see his post<\/a>for the full discussion). And I note that he is particularly comparing Tibetan Buddhism here with other forms of <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Mahayana Buddhism<\/a>, but I think it\u2019s fair to toss in Theravada:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The volume of printed materials on Tibetan Buddhism is greatest and most accessible to non-specialists.<\/li>\n<li>More Western students are going Tibetan institutes in India than to East Asia (I imagine Theravadin countries get more \u2018religious-scholar tourism\u2019 than East Asian ones, but still less than the Tibetan institutions in India).<\/li>\n<li>Specificially, Taiwanese Buddhist organizations <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fgs.org.tw\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Foguang Shan<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dharmadrum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dharma Drum Mountain<\/a>\u00a0have great resources, yet less than two dozen Western monastics.<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan teachers (e.g.\u00a0HH the Dalai Lama)\u00a0draw larger crowds of committed students.<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan groups are working on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/84000.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">84,000 Project<\/a>, an ambitious plan to translate the Tibetan canon, and actively training translators; there is nothing comparable for the East Asian canon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0Jeffrey continues, \u201cNow it begs the question why would this be?\u201d<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Perhaps the teaching curriculum? Lama Tsongkhapa\u2019s\u00a0<em>Lam Rim Chen Mo<\/em>\u00a0(Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path) is a simple go-to for Gelugpas. Chinese and Japanese don\u2019t have anything quite like this. Theravadins have the Visuddhimagga, but it doesn\u2019t seem to have been popularized in the way that the <em>Lam Rim Chen Mo<\/em>, or Mipham\u2019s \u201c<em>Lamp<\/em>\u201d have, or works like those of Shantideva or even Atisha.<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan Buddhists speak English \u2013 many big names at least, while East Asian big names often don\u2019t.<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan Buddhism\u00a0\u201cis not heavily tied to an immigrant ethnicity unlike, say, Chinese Buddhism which is very closely tied to a specific ethnic group. Chinese Buddhist traditions might even specifically promote themselves as exclusively \u201cChinese Buddhist\u201d and in the process exclude members of the host culture.\u201d \u2013 This I quote specifically because I don\u2019t think it\u2019s accurate \u2013 based at least on various accounts and my limited time at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsilai.org\/en\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hsi Lai Temple in Los Angeles<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Tibetans have been engaging scientists in fruitful discussion.<\/li>\n<li>East Asian monastic life is difficult for Westerners (inaccessible, too foreign, strict, etc).<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan culture is generally more relaxed than Chinese, e.g. prostrations, prescribed forms for how to bow, prostrate, salute, eat and walk.<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan Buddhism\u00a0\u201chas a tradition of debate and it is not considered impolite to engage in it with your superiors.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, <a href=\"http:\/\/huayanzang.blogspot.tw\/2012\/10\/why-is-tibetan-buddhism-more-popular.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">see his post<\/a> for more on each of his points.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>As I mentioned, I\u2019m not entirely sure Tibetan Buddhism is the most popular form of Buddhism in the West, or even Mahayana Buddhism (although I agree with Jeffrey in suspecting that it is). I think his work is commendable in it\u2019s thoughtful approach to the topic and what I hope to get from you is some feedback and thoughts. <strong>Where you live are there more Tibetan groups? A city full of Theravadins or six different Zen groups?<\/strong> I can\u2019t hope to amass anything approaching a systematic survey, but perhaps a small and hopefully reasonably representative sample could be gathered.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>One interesting statistic that most of us overlook is that there are more than an estimated 300,000 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sgi.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">SGI<\/a> members in the US (See Prebish: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B006R8P1QM?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=213733&amp;creative=393177&amp;creativeASIN=B006R8P1QM&amp;linkCode=shr&amp;tag=montanafreethink&amp;qid=1350980889&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=looking+west+prebish\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Looking West: A Primer for American Buddhism<\/em><\/a>). If we pick a low estimate for total Buddhists, say one million, then they are <em>very likely<\/em> the largest single group. But if we estimate high, perhaps six million Buddhists, then SGI is but a small part of that picture. <strong>Obviously this is a question dying to be answered, however tentatively, by some earnest young scholar who is able and willing to go do the polling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>If indeed Tibetan Buddhism is the most popular, I would like to have seen some discussion of the <strong>diaspora<\/strong> as a key underlying ingredient. Tibetans HAD to leave Tibet, HAD to learn new systems and HAD to attract foreign benefactors in order to survive and maintain a semblance of the culture and life they knew for centuries in Tibet. They HAD to be more flexible in adopting different techniques and norms regarding teaching and ediquette.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>At the same time, I think there are <em>real<\/em> cultural differences that may have played a part. Tibetans are, typically, quite funny and fun-loving people. I recall one Independent Study I read while on the Antioch program in India that was devoted entirely to Tibetan humor \u2013 something that the author found utterly unique amongst the many different Buddhists she encountered in Bodh Gaya. This has been my experience as well.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019m also not so sure about how \u2018easy\u2019 Tibetan monasticism is compared to that of East Asia. Certainly there are some images of rather brutal conditions in Zen monasteries, but Tibetan monastic life is no picnic, and there are Zen orders that are notably more relaxed (the <a href=\"http:\/\/obcon.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Order of Buddhist Contemplatives<\/a> is one such Zen group that has attracted Western monastics in the US and UK.) <strong>And in terms of texts, Suzuki Roshi\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1590308492?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=213733&amp;creative=393185&amp;creativeASIN=1590308492&amp;linkCode=shr&amp;tag=montanafreethink&amp;qid=1350981177&amp;sr=1-1-catcorr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Zen Mind, Beginner\u2019s Mind<\/em><\/a>\u00a0has probably outsold every living Tibetan author <em>combined<\/em> over the last 40 years<\/strong> (that is very conjectural and I\u2019m happy to be corrected). But Zen and Zen-inspired works were <em>the big thing<\/em> in the 60s and 70s. True, none of these works were anything like the systematic philosophical \u00a0works of\u00a0Tsongkhapa or Buddhaghosa, but many were, in their own way, \u2018complete\u2019 textual guides.<\/p>\n<p>But these are only minor objections. Again, I\u2019m hoping to hear back from you (readers), on both what types of Buddhism are practiced near you (feel free to be creative in how you choose to classify\/categorize them) and why you think this is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If Jeffrey is correct, and I suspect he is, then East Asian (and South Asian) Buddhists might want to change some of their strategies for winning over new Buddhists and monastics in and from the West<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>*I last mentioned Jeffrey in discussing his fascinating idea to use the Google NGram to trace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/americanbuddhist\/2012\/07\/the-rise-and-fall-of-buddhism-in-the-west.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the rise and fall of Buddhim \u2013 in search<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My friend\u00a0Jeffrey Kotyk*\u00a0of the\u00a0Flower Ornament Depository \u83ef\u56b4\u85cf\u00a0blog has another interesting post worth reading this week, discussing the visibility, if not overall popularity of Tibetan Buddhism in America.
