Such is the news from Joshua Eaton<\/a>\u00a0(website<\/a>)\u00a0today. Radio Free Asia states that \u201cThe burnings take place as Chinese authorities violently suppress a Tibetan student demonstration.\u201d<\/p>\n

China says 18-year-old Tibetan self-immolates:\u00a0Teenager\u2019s death latest of six self-immolations in the last week as China\u2019s communist leadership undergoes transfer of power<\/a>\u00a0(Nov 11)<\/p>\n

Slowly but surely these deaths are making their way into the mainstream media. But these aren\u2019t the fifth or sixth or even tenth or eleventh cases of self-immolation. According to writer and activist\u00a0Joshua Eaton<\/a>, there have been\u00a074 self-immolations\u00a0inside Tibet<\/em>\u00a0alone since 2009 (names, dates, etc here<\/a>).
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

China\u2019s response?\u00a0Massive\u00a0surveillance<\/a>\u00a0and guards with\u00a0fire extinguishers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Everyone else\u2019s response:\u00a0mostly nothing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That number is now 85 and there is still virtually zero international response.<\/p>\n

CNN\u2019s recent story, \u201cHow many more Tibetans will sacrifice themselves?<\/a>\u201d is virtually\u00a0contemptible, leading with a video\u00a0contrasting scenes of \u201cunverifiable\u201d self-immolations protesting \u201cwhat they call\u201d religious and cultural repression on the one hand and staged state television clips of \u201cethnic unity and harmony\u201d as the narrator, Steven Jiang, claims that Tibetans are \u201cthanking the ruling Communist party for policies they say have improved their daily lives.\u201d When the Chinese government is widely known for its relatively open propagandizing<\/a>\u00a0(more on the 50 Cent Party<\/a> via wiki), the qualifiers \u201cunverifiable\u201d and \u201cso called\u201d should be ahead of their<\/em> (the government\u2019s) statements, not those made by activists and human rights groups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Come on, CNN, you can do better, much better.
\n<\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n

According to the Albany Tribune today<\/a>, a large demonstration, estimated at 1000 people was also violently broken up today by Chinese police in NE Tibet, sending 20 Tibetans to the hospital.<\/p>\n

Radio Free Asia also comments<\/a>, concerning the net:<\/p>\n

Netizens<\/strong><\/p>\n

News of the Tibetan self-immolations have been spreading rapidly among China\u2019s massive netizen community in recent weeks, a New York-based rights group said.<\/p>\n

\u201cChinese netizens have helped spread reports of Tibetan self-immolations online and expressed their concerns by posting comments on Twitter,\u201d Human Rights in China said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have done so despite intensified government crackdowns and Internet censorship in the lead-up to and during the 18th [ruling Chinese Communist] Party Congress,\u201d it said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
