That group states its goals as being, in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The goal and aims of this page is to provide news, information and updates about the ongoing situation in Tibet. Along with being a source of information, we want this space to provide Tibetan Freedom activists with online tools and tactics to amplify the message of Tibetans inside Tibet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Overshadowed in the UK by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.levesoninquiry.org.uk\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Leveson Report<\/a> and in the US by the \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-250_162-57556312\/obama-taking-fiscal-cliff-fight-to-the-public\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">fiscal cliff<\/a>\u2018,<strong> the UN yesterday voted overwhelmingly to recognize Palestine as a\u00a0non-member observer state<\/strong>, which means it is recognized as\u00a0sovereign\u00a0state, and is free to submit a petition to join as a full member at its discretion. Switzerland\u00a0was a permanent observer state from 1948 to 2002, until becoming a full member on September 10, 2002. Currently, the only other\u00a0non-member observer state is\u00a0the\u00a0<a title=\"Holy See\" href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holy_See\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Holy See<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Are we living in an age of increasing national division? The continuing fall of empires?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scottish_independence\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scotland<\/a>\u00a0can vote\u00a0on a referendum for independence as soon as next year. <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalonia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Catalunya<\/a>, the home of Barcelona and an economic power-house of Spain, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2012\/nov\/22\/lessons-catalonia-learn-scotland\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">stepping toward independence<\/a>, though in their case there is no legal route to separation. The UK and Spain are, after all, old empires, kingdoms that united previously separate nations under a single flag. Until now it has been often simply accepted that the value of unity has been far greater than that of national independence.<\/p>\n<p>Those in the US can laugh about the numerous petitions to the White House for individual states to secede from the union after President Obama\u2019s re-election: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2012\/nov\/13\/white-house-petition-texas-independence\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Texas<\/a>, for example. Another petition quickly followed, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/now.msn.com\/austin-files-petition-to-secede-from-texas\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">liberal hot-bed of Austin<\/a>, asking to secede from Texas. I\u2019m sure there are conservative neighborhoods in Austin that would like to secede from the city, and then households who would like to secede from those neighborhoods, and family members who would like to secede from those households, and so on. The division has no logical end.<\/p>\n<p>A good segue for a\u00a0discussion\u00a0of the aggregates (<a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skandha\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">kandhas\/skandhas<\/a>) or <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abhidhamma_Pitaka\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Abhidhamma<\/a> philosophy?<\/p>\n<p>The situation in Tibet is much closer to that of the Palestinian people, <strong>with important differences.<\/strong> Does drawing Tibet and Palestine into comparison help the Tibetan cause? The community action network, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avaaz.org\/en\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">avaaz.org<\/a>, reports on the UN vote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Palestinian people\u2019s journey to freedom is far from over. But this is a powerful step, and our community played a key role in it. Palestine\u2019s Ambassador to Europe said today:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cAvaaz and its members across the world have played a crucial role in persuading governments to support the Palestinian people\u2019s bid for a state and for freedom and peace. They have stood with us throughout and their solidarity and support will be remembered and cherished across Palestine.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Leila Shahid, General Palestinian Delegate to Europe<\/p>\n<table width=\"360\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/avaazimages.s3.amazonaws.com\/paly%20large%20-%20nov%202012%20RB.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" align=\"right\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table width=\"340\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em>Brussels Action: While EU leaders were met, THIS was happening right outside their windows<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/avaazimages.s3.amazonaws.com\/Spain%20large%20--%20nov%202012%20RB.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" align=\"right\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table width=\"340\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em>Madrid Action: Avaaz members want Spain PM Rajoy to say YES!<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The US and Israeli governments, beholden to extreme lobby groups (yes, sadly even Obama has given in), threw everything they had at crushing this vote, using financial threats and even threatening to overthrow the Palestinian President if he went ahead.<strong>Europe was the key swing vote,<\/strong>\u00a0and under intense US pressure, leaders were, just two weeks ago, leaning towards not supporting the Palestinian state. Knowing the stakes, our community responded with the speed and democratic force that we needed to win:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nearly 1.8 million of us signed the petition<\/strong>\u00a0calling for statehood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Thousands of us donated to fund public opinion polls across Europe \u2014 showing that\u00a0<strong>a whopping 79% of Europeans supported a Palestinian state.<\/strong>\u00a0Our polls were plastered all over the media, and repeatedly cited in Parliamentary debates in the UK, Spain and France!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>We sent\u00a0<strong>tens of thousands of emails, Facebook messages and Tweets to leaders across Europe<\/strong>\u00a0and made thousands of calls to foreign ministries and heads of state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>We unfurled a giant\u00a0<strong>4-storey banner outside the EU Commission in Brussels (right) while leaders were meeting inside.<\/strong>\u00a0Then, we staged another stunt in Madrid. Previously, we had sailed a flotilla of ships past the UN calling for a vote. Our actions made headlines all over Europe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Avaaz staff and members met with dozens and dozens of government ministers,<\/strong>\u00a0top advisors, senior journalists, parliamentarians and thought leaders in each of the key countries, in many cases teaming up to win over leaders one by one through advocacy, pressure, parliamentary resolutions and public statements, always drawing on the surge in people power behind this cause.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>We reached out to\u00a0<strong>key thought leaders like St\u00e9phane Hessel, a 94-year old survivor of Nazi concentration camps,<\/strong>\u00a0and Ron Pundak, an Israeli who played a key role in Oslo peace process, to speak out in favour of statehood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One by one, key European states broke with the US to answer the call of justice and their peoples. In the final vote tally we got just now, only 9 countries out of 193 have voted against!\u00a0<strong>France, Spain, Italy, Sweden and most of Europe has voted for Palestine.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems highly unlikely that Tibet will see anything approaching recognized statehood soon. Even Taiwan, which is self-governing, has been <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China_and_the_United_Nations#Efforts_to_reintroduce_the_ROC_to_the_UN\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">denied this status<\/a> due to China\u2019s territorial claim over the island. <strong>However, with increasing attention being brought to the plight of Tibetans under Chinese occupation and the rights of people everywhere to be self-determining, there is hope that meaningful, positive steps forward can be taken<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/83\/2012\/11\/Tibet_Independent-Nation.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1845\" title=\"Tibet_Independent Nation\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/83\/2012\/11\/Tibet_Independent-Nation-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tibet: Independent Nation\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was the image posted today by the Tsampa Revolution facebook group.
