Or, more honestly, to dip my toes in the <s>tepid<\/s> icy cold waters of the academic job market.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\">Speaking with a seasoned religious studies professor here tonight helped lighten the mood. \u201cHey, it can only go up,\u201d he observed.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\"><i>Technically\u2026<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: left\"><b>What about dual Ph.D.s?\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<p>Earlier this year I wrote about the dismal job field hitting all sectors of academia, <a href=\"http:\/\/americanbuddhist.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/career-in-academia-in-21st-century-or.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">A career in academia in the 21st century, or: job, schmob<\/a>. That post, and this even more dismal news aside, I\u2019m still generally quite optimistic. I\u2019d love to teach at one of those small liberal arts schools on the East coast, and spend some years at a top research institution mentoring the so-called best and brightest (in reality the smart ones who were in the right place at the right time). <b>But with some creativity and flexibility, there are countless opportunities for the academic \u2013 most of them simply outside of academia<\/b>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>But within academia I must say, and I\u2019ve heard from many others,<i> life is good<\/i>. Even with a depressingly depressed job market.\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #990000\"><b>Update:<\/b> it\u2019s even more depressing (for some of us) when you look at <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhism<\/a> as a job category <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsnonline.org\/images\/stories\/2010March\/PDFs\/Job_Center_Stats.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #990000\">here<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #990000\">. 0 primary positions, 3 secondary. 28 primary candidates, 46 secondary. \u00a0With zero jobs and 28 candidates\u2026 lets see\u2026 I\u2019ll get back to you on the odds\u2026 Even 3 to 46 is 0.awful. VS the golden age of 2007 (it was probably even more golden in prior years but I don\u2019t have the data at hand) when there were 17 secondary positions to the 35 job-seekers. Odds = good. Seems like more fools are getting degrees in Buddhism while wise institutions are cutting back on jobs.
