Many Zen Buddhists mark this day often the week leading up to it with diligent practice, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/monkeymind\/2013\/12\/to-touch-the-heart-mind-3.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">James Ford (from Monkey Mind) did<\/a>; and here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/monkeymind\/2013\/12\/rohatsu-sesshin-2013.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">his post-Rohatsu sesshin post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the Western Buddhist world, it is probably the second best known Buddhist holiday after <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vesak\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Vesak<\/a> (Pali: <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vesak\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ves\u0101kha<\/a>), which is still celebrated according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buddhist_calendar\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">lunar calendar<\/a>, taking place on the full moon usually occurring in the Gregorian months of April, May, or June.<\/p>\n<p>Borrowing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/americanbuddhist\/2011\/12\/things-to-think-about-in-the-buddhist-world.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a post in 2011<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This week we celebrated <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bodhi_Day\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rohatsu<\/a>, the Japanese Buddhist celebration of the Buddha\u2019s enlightenment. For Theravadins, he was born, enlightened, and died on <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vesak\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Vesak<\/a>, which falls in May or June in many places, or April in\u00a0China, Japan, Korea according to wikipedia \u2013 which seems to mean that Japanese Buddhists celebrate the Buddha\u2019s enlightenment twice. In any case, along with very nice messages from Shako Yuinen at the <a href=\"http:\/\/buddhistmilitarysangha.blogspot.com\/2011\/12\/happy-bodhi-day.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Buddhist Military Blog<\/a>, James at <a href=\"http:\/\/thebuddhistblog.blogspot.com\/2011\/12\/bodhi-day-message-of-2011-gift-of.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Buddhist Blog<\/a>, and Uku at <a href=\"http:\/\/possibleway.blogspot.com\/2011\/12\/happy-jodo-e-or-something-like-that.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Zen \u2013 the Possible Way<\/a>, came a very poignant story of redemption and acceptance through practice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Marking the occasion
