<\/span>Since March<\/a> or so I have been thinking about running this year\u2019s <\/span>Missoula Marathon<\/a> (mid-July). This ambition goes back to around 2007, when I ran the Missoula\u2019s first annual 1\/2 marathon (photo here<\/a> with me, medal, epsom salt and bananas). \n

A typical marathon training<\/a> schedule goes for 18 weeks and has all kinds of rules and stipulations for distances and rest and diet and all that jazz. I\u2019m not sure who actually follows such schedules, but being a lazy, busy Buddhist academic, I\u2019ve not done much thus far<\/span>. I run a lot as is typically, and haven\u2019t felt the need to get all professional about it just yet. But after some chats with good friend about marathons and how, supposedly, strange things start to happen to your body after 18 or so miles (about 3 hours for slow folks like me) of running, I\u2019ve decided to hold off of any formal commitment to 26.2 miles in July. <\/p>\n

Until then, though, I\u2019m trying to run some 5k, 10k, and longer runs and races to get in shape. I figure that if I can catch up to the \u2018proper\u2019 marathon training schedule by mid-June or so, I\u2019ll give it a go. <\/span>If not, I\u2019ll take my friend\u2019s advice and just run another 1\/2 marathon and aim for personal best in time.<\/p>\n

I will omit the fact that the lead runner had finished about 6 minutes ahead of me and these guys (in a 5k!). It was good fun and I got to meet Evan, a friend of Julie\u2019s co-worker, Jim. And then came a young woman, Evan\u2019s friend, through the finish line and she said to me, \u201chey, did you teach Buddhism<\/a> here a couple years ago?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYea, yea I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she lit up and said, \u201cI took that class.\u201d <\/p>\n

Small world. Small town<\/span>. Happy to be here.<\/p>\n
