~ Basics of Buddhism \/ Buddhist Ethics \/ Buddhist Meditation<\/span><\/p>\n \n<\/p> 1 \u2013 the worldview \u2013 just to get you inside the mind a bit of the Buddha or his followers<\/p>\n a. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Samsara \u2013 cycle of rebirth \/ redeath<\/p>\n b. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Dukkha \u2013 unsatisfactoriness of life, nothing we can really hang on to\u2026<\/p>\n c. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Moksha \u2013 release, some sort of transcendence of it all\u2026.<\/p>\n 2 \u2013 Buddha\u2019s response<\/p>\n \n<\/p> a. <\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span>Turn inward \u2013 a break away from priestly hierarchy, away from caste structure, away from reliance on others.<\/p>\n b. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Affirmed Samsara and Dukkha and Changed Moksha to Nirvana (extinguishing)<\/p>\n a. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Fires of Greed<\/p>\n b. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Aversion<\/p>\n c. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Delusion<\/p>\n Formulated a 3-fold Path for extinguishing the 3 poisons or root-afflictions<\/p>\n \n<\/p> 1 \u2013 Ethics<\/p>\n 2 \u2013 Meditation<\/p>\n 3 \u2013 Wisdom<\/p>\n \n<\/p> Ethics<\/u><\/b> is the foundation: one undertakes to live a life free of harming others (ahimsa), of taking the not given, sexual misconduct, false or harsh speech, and intoxication. <\/span><\/p>\n Undertaking these, one suffuses his\/her life with calm and tranquility, setting the stage for:<\/p>\n Meditation<\/u><\/b>. <\/span>Here one uses various techniques to calm the mind, to bring it to balance. <\/span>The most common of these techniques is mindfulness of breathing, which we will do. <\/span>Another major one is the metta \/ loving friendliness practice. <\/span>That one brings daily life \u2013 ethics \u2013 into the meditation front and center. <\/p>\n Finally, this leads to <\/p>\n Wisdom<\/u><\/b>. <\/span>This is where one gets into the philosophy of Buddhism, the teaching that all is impermanent, all is lacking a substantial self, and all \u2013 in our experience \u2013 is subject to suffering or unsatisfactoriness. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n These are my notes for a short introduction to Buddhism\/Buddhist meditation given to a class on campus today (man, I love teaching, but more on that later).
