But this week in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/04\/10\/living\/harris-anchorman-buddhist\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a CNN article<\/a>, ABC anchorman Dan Harris does just that, writing:<\/p>\n<div class=\"el__leafmedia el__leafmedia--sourced-paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626;\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">If you had told me as recently as a few years ago that I\u2019d ever become a Buddhist \u2014 never mind that I might even admit to it publicly \u2014 I would have coughed my beer up through my nose.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626;\">I was raised by secular scientists in The People\u2019s Republic of Massachusetts. (I did have a Bar Mitzvah \u2014 but only for the money.) I\u2019ve spent my career as a proud skeptic. My favorite part of being a journalist is the right \u2014 the obligation, really \u2014 to doubt everything and everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626;\"><span class=\"diigoHighlight id_5987f1cab04fd873e5a2d8642a15a788 type_0 green\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: inherit;\">And yet, here I am \u2026 a Buddhist.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">In the article, a\u00a0re-write from the video linked below, Harris describes his journey from a staunchly secular-Jewish upbringing through workaholism, drugs, a panic attack, therapy, and, eventually, mindfulness meditation and Buddhism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">Harris makes a growingly common claim at the outset. <strong>He says, \u201cBuddhism is not really a faith \u2014 at least not as I understand or practice it.\u201d<\/strong> In studying religions today, we try to avoid using the word \u201cfaith\u201d as a synonym, even though it may have been in the past and is still used as such in popular speech. This is because the link of faith and religion comes from the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim religions where \u00a0(for many) to be \u201cinside\u201d the religion is a matter of what you believe, or where your faith lies. It\u2019s much more complicated than that, especially with Judaism, but I digress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">With the arrival of non-Western religions on the academic scene, especially in the 1950s-70s, the definition of \u201creligion\u201d grew and twisted and contorted. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00N4F7RWW?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=213733&amp;creative=393177&amp;creativeASIN=B00N4F7RWW&amp;linkCode=shr&amp;tag=montanafreethink\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">textbook I used for three years of teaching World Religions<\/a>, the definition given (after a great array of quotations ranging from Friedrich Schleiermacher and Karl Marx to Mark Twain and Goldie Hawn) is:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\"><strong>Religion is a pattern of beliefs and practices that expresses and enacts what a community regards as sacred and\/or of ultimate value.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">Buddhism fits well into this and is generally regarded as one of the \u201cbig 5 (or 7 or 10\u2026.)\u201d world religions. However, many people today are taking up Buddhism without:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">a) much sense of community; these \u2018nightstand Buddhists\u2019 read the books, perhaps meditate and maybe every so often go to a sitting group or retreat, but they don\u2019t find themselves in the sort of \u2018religious community\u2019 imagined and studied by academics<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">or<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">b) much sense of a shared beliefs or an \u201cultimate value\u201d with other Buddhists. The Buddhism of many today is perfectly compatible with neo-liberal capitalism, while for others, Buddhism demands socialism, anarchism, or a profound commitment to social activism.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">So scholars like myself are left scratching our heads. Is Buddhism becoming an even more amorphous category (perhaps it long has been!)? Can a person who has zero connection with any Buddhist community really be a Buddhist? Can books and perhaps an online chat experience count as community? Can Buddhism be used as a tool for or adjunct to another set of ultimate values?<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626; text-align: left;\">Harris certainly seems to think that Buddhism escapes the category of religion altogether, as he writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><span class=\"diigoHighlight id_42ce526fb174667b1d36a631b7732866 type_0 green\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: inherit;\">\u2026 this \u201creligion\u201d is not, in my view, really a religion<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">As the writer Stephen Batchelor (author of the excellent book, \u201cBuddhism Without Beliefs\u201d) has said, Buddhism is \u201cnot something to believe in but<em>\u00a0something to do<\/em>.\u201d (Emphasis mine.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #262626;\">The Buddha did not claim to be a God or a prophet. And to the extent that he espoused ideas such as karma and rebirth \u2014 he explicitly told his followers to take them or leave them. He didn\u2019t even envision something called Buddhism;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"diigoHighlight id_4bf50a12789fe524e2fa9fa8daa257ae type_0 green\" style=\"font-style: inherit; color: #262626;\">he was just teaching his followers to meditate and behave ethically<\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #262626;\">Ethics, Meditation, and\u2026 \u00a0What\u00a0important part of the path is Harris leaving out here?\u00a0<em>Wisdom<\/em>. There is a philosophical structure to the Buddha\u2019s thought that did differentiate it from other religio-philosophies of his day. Just as with other aspects of Buddhism, how obvious you find this structure and how important you think it is to your own practice will vary from person to person. Harris continues:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #262626;\">It is certainly true, though, that in many parts of the world, people do practice Buddhism as a religion \u2014 complete with elaborate metaphysical claims. But again, you are under no obligation to accept these. And if you are worried that practicing Buddhism will erode your preexisting religious beliefs, it\u2019s worth noting that many people of faith say <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist meditation<\/a> has helped them cut down on the mental noise and thereby feel closer to God. One theologian even wrote a book called \u201cWithout the Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/185168963X?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=213733&amp;creative=393185&amp;creativeASIN=185168963X&amp;linkCode=shr&amp;tag=montanafreethink\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">that book was Paul Knitter<\/a>, and you can read more about a short movie featuring him,\u00a0<em>Jesus &amp; Buddha: Practicing Across Traditions<\/em>, from my review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/americanbuddhist\/2013\/03\/jesus-buddha-practicing-across-traditions-a-review.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. Harris concludes on why he named his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=213733&amp;creative=393193&amp;linkCode=shr&amp;tag=montanafreethink\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">10% Happier<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626;\">While I\u2019m clearly a big fan of Buddhism, I hasten to add that it definitely won\u2019t solve all of your problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"color: #262626;\">I\u2019ve learned the hard way that it won\u2019t make you taller or regrow your hair\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Obviously [10% Happier is]\u00a0an absurdly unscientific estimate, but I like it \u2014 because it\u2019s true enough, and it sounds like a good return on investment.\u00a0<span class=\"diigoHighlight id_757d1e4d70d51919870b472422b1b4fb type_0 green\" style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: inherit;\">It\u2019s also a way to counterprogram against the reckless overpromising I\u2019ve seen in so much of the self-help world<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">After six years of meditating, I am far from enlightened. (If my wife were writing this article, she\u2019d call it, \u201c90% Still A Moron.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">But mindfulness has dramatically cut down on my levels of useless rumination, mindless misbehavior, counterproductive crankiness and general distractedness.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">As a long-time practitioner I can certainly concur with these observations.
