Rev. angel Kyodo williams, who\u00a0spoke\u00a0last month\u00a0with Bhikkhu Bodhi about mindfulness, responsibility, and social justice<\/a>, has been the guest teacher for June\u00a0at\u00a0\u201cMindful Mondays.\u201d\u00a0Mindful Mondays is\u00a0a community \u201cdesigned to democratize wellbeing\u201d according to founder\u00a0 Kerri Kelly<\/a>\u00a0of CTZN Well. This week Rev. angel Kyodo williams\u00a0led a meditation titled #9Minutes for Charleston<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After the meditation williams led a\u00a0discussion of race in America, noting in particular that had this been an act by a Muslim the term \u201cterrorism\u201d would have been used immediately, and if these had been white victims the term \u201cmassacre\u201d would have been used immediately, but instead we\u2019re told that this is a \u201cchurch shooting.\u201d And these labels both deny the suffering of the victims\u2019 families and ease the discomfort of the white supremacist society.<\/p>\n

The process, williams says, of confronting white privilege must be undertaken by all of us who uphold a system of privilege \u2013 actively and knowingly or not. \u201cI think the main interruption is to name whiteness and to name white supremacy and racism for what they are,\u201d she said, \u201cand to stop coddling each other and coddling yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
