After all, we now have choices like never before: what career to pursue, where to live, who to associate with, what to read, what to dream of, and so on.  Yet we must also ask how much this \u2018thins\u2019 out our lives, keeps us eternally skirting the surface of reality.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/localhost:3913\/f607c78045699e6068f9627a327e9a77\/image1671.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px;clear: both;float: left\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/localhost:3913\/f607c78045699e6068f9627a327e9a77\/image1671.jpg?size=160\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br>Sometimes all of these choices present themselves not so much as opportunities but as burdens.  <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">We <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-weight: bold\">must choose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"> a career, a place to call home, friends, dreams, and so on<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>I find myself going in circles, trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/localhost:3913\/78a20dfaea985145242dc7fcef9e580c\/image1673.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px;clear: both;float: left\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost:3913\/78a20dfaea985145242dc7fcef9e580c\/image1673.jpg?size=160\" border=\"0\"><\/a>balance life, love, friends, family, a place to call home, studies, work, my practice\u2026  <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Learning where my priorities must lie is an ongoing process. <\/span>I am sure this is true of all of us. Now that the busyness of work and resettling for the fourth time in <a href=\"https:\/\/localhost:3913\/a9d48d131aca2209aacb47e95ce7e205\/image1674.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px;clear: both;float: left\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/localhost:3913\/a9d48d131aca2209aacb47e95ce7e205\/image1674.jpg?size=160\" border=\"0\"><\/a>less than a year have worn off, I find myself pondering my latest round of imbalance and growth.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly my practice and deepening understanding of <span style=\"font-style: italic\">the world <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic\">through Buddhist eyes<\/span> have fallen out of their place at the center of my life. <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">I let them fall away; I think with the best of intentions.  <\/span>I saw suffering and thought somehow I could help. In idealistic naivet\u00e9 I plunged into darkness without a lamp.  I could say I was pulled in, but I went of my own free will. And I could equally say I was pulled out, but <span style=\"font-style: italic\">I left by that same free will<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>And what got me out?  <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Am I truly out<\/span>?  I think so (mostly), and I credit the safety line I had with family, friends, and a spiritual mentor.  \u2018Twas a thin line, stretched over many a mile, but strengthened by their firm grips and my honesty and trust in them.  <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">While I\u2019m a great fan of individual initiative and rugged self-reliance, I see more and more the importance of strengthening our webs of interconnectedness, our community and family bonds<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Now I sit, listening to the wonderful soundtrack to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oncesoundtrack.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Once<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">\u201d after a night of simple birthday celebration, simple manual labor (unloading <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clay_pigeon_shooting\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">clay pigeons<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"> for the local gun club), and simple <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%27more\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">s\u2019mores<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"> with family<\/span>.  And I ponder my relationship with <span style=\"font-style: italic\">what I want in life<\/span>.  Maybe it\u2019s just <span style=\"font-style: italic\">too much<\/span>.  Maybe, on the great menu of possibilities presented to us in the 21st century, I just want too much.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Because it is with the simple stuff that I am happiest.  <\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/localhost:3913\/247ce2e95c271d1dd7af25c4973e7c65\/image1688.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/localhost:3913\/247ce2e95c271d1dd7af25c4973e7c65\/image1688.jpg?size=320\" border=\"0\"><br><\/a><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">The Grandkids last night with Gran-ma and Pappy.
