{"id":506,"date":"2008-08-13T05:51:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-13T05:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/americanbuddhist\/2008\/08\/remarkable-beauty\/"},"modified":"2008-08-13T05:51:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-13T05:51:00","slug":"remarkable-beauty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/americanbuddhist\/2008\/08\/remarkable-beauty.html","title":{"rendered":"Remarkable Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>And I don\u2019t just mean my travel partner\u2026<\/p>\n<p>This weekend I postponed a trip to see my folks in Helena (leaving tomorrow) to grab an opportunity to visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glac\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Glacier National Park<\/a>.  <span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">It was the perfect end to a long and wonderful week.<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umt.edu\/ethics\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Center for Ethics<\/a> had just concluded hosted <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Debating Science<\/span>, a major project bringing around 30 graduate students, mostly in the sciences, together with experts in the fields of Biotech, Nanotech, and Climate Change for five intense days of lectures, seminars, and discussion (oh, and some hiking and beer of course \u2013 this <span style=\"font-style: italic\">is <\/span>Missoula).<\/p>\n<p>One of those students was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2755301713\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sierra<\/a>, an extremely bright and charming young woman studying the effects of Climate Change on mussels around the world.  She and I got to chat a bit at a gathering on the first day of the workshop and on the last day I offered to show her around <a href=\"http:\/\/visitmt.com\/categories\/moreinfo.asp?IDRRecordID=12750&amp;siteid=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Missoula\u2019s fantastic farmer\u2019s market<\/a> the next morning.  At one point along the way we bumped into a very friendly Obama volunteer who was so excited for Sierra\u2019s planned trip to Glacier that he ended up telling us more about places to go and see than the upcoming election.  <span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">It was then that I decided I need to see Glacier myself (having only been once before) and offered my services as chauffeur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3047\/2756121656_322d10f3bc.jpg?v=0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 400px\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3047\/2756121656_322d10f3bc.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a>Sierra took me up on it and by midday we were in Glacier National Park.  Yet that wasn\u2019t before our Obama-man\u2019s advice to <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montana_Highway_83\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">drive up the Swan Valley<\/a> paid off.  On Swan Lake we happened across the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/huckleberryfestival.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Huckleberry Festival<\/a>, a gathering of local artisans, musicians, and of course \u2013 huckleberry products of all kinds.  We picked up some huckleberry fudge,  skipped some rocks in the lake, and headed on down the road.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2756139676\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;float: left;cursor: pointer;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3001\/2756139676_ba90d0057b.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a>Once in the park, I could barely keep my eyes on the road, as one stunning vista after another greeted us at each turn.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">It\u2019s impossible to put into words the majesty and grandeur of this place, so I\u2019ll just say you have to see it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">yourself one day.<\/span> In fact, I\u2019ve thought of little else than getting back as soon as possible ever since leaving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2755299475\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;float: left;cursor: pointer;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3092\/2755299475_3b0cd87378.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a>Sierra and I had less than 48 hours to try to find the very best of the park, a daunting and unfortunate task indeed.  <span style=\"font-style: italic;font-weight: bold\">Our first day <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-weight: bold\">was spent mostly in the car, driving the breadth of the Going to the Sun highway, from West Glacier to St. Mary and back. <\/span> The drive was gorgeous; we could barely stay in the car for all of the amazing views that drew us out to be seen in person.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2756128304\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;float: left;cursor: pointer;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3249\/2756128304_ec01b17c0c.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a>Around late afternoon dark clouds swirled in with amazing speed, consuming entire mountains in just minutes.  Just east of Logan Pass they caught up with us, delivering a downpour nearly too thick to drive through.  <span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">Surviving <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">the torrents and reaching<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\"> St. Mary, we turned back only to be greeted again by those<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\"> same clouds, this time spitting down <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2756124400\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hailstones the size of <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2756124400\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">quarters<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2755297743\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;float: left;cursor: pointer;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3044\/2755297743_6018fbe3e7.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">On day two the plan was for a long hike, a jaunt into the back country to escape the people and cars and take in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">wilderness experience. <\/span> Our goal was to climb all the way up and on to Sperry Glacier, a 10.1 mile one-way journey.  Yet the amazing views and, even more so, our conversations on life and trees (Sierra knows far more about the trees around here than me, including the Latin names of most of them) slowed us down a good bit and we only made it about 6 miles in before deciding to make our way to the town of Hot Springs, MT, for a soak.  We did get to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2755316353\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pick huckleberries<\/a>, share the trail with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2756150712\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a young mule buck<\/a>, and see some other great sites, so it certainly was time well spent.<\/p>\n<p>Overall I can definitely say that 2 days is far too little to really take in Glacier National Park.  My guess is that John Muir had it absolutely right when he said:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/buddhist_philosopher\/2755305857\/in\/set-72157606683714419\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px;float: right;cursor: pointer;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3147\/2755305857_a967ccbb22.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cGive a month at least to this precious reserve. <span style=\"font-style: italic;font-weight: bold\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">he time will not be taken from the sum of your life.
