Once again, they roughly\u00a0matched\u00a0demographically with\u00a0previous months\u2019 polls, so we\u2019ll again jump right to the question of which candidate each respondent most supported:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6173\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/83\/2016\/09\/presidential-poll-2016-september.jpg\" alt=\"presidential poll 2016 september\" width=\"672\" height=\"316\"><\/p>\n<p>This marks a small down-turn for Clinton, who last month had nearly 55% support.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6060\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/83\/2016\/08\/july-august-survey-buddhist-political-preference.jpg\" alt=\"july-august survey buddhist political preference\" width=\"676\" height=\"279\"><\/p>\n<p>This dip matches a number of polls that showed Clinton around 8% ahead of Trump in early August compared with just 2% today (according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2016\/president\/us\/general_election_trump_vs_clinton_vs_johnson_vs_stein-5952.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">real clear politics<\/a>). However, among readers surveyed here, the shift has not been to Trump but rather to both Jill Stein and Gary Johnson. Trump has held steady at around 6% support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When asked about\u00a0why they support Clinton, the word \u201cexperience\u201d came out again and again.<\/strong> One simply put, \u201cExperience, values.\u201d Another wrote, \u201cA good fit overall, an experienced politician, and not a crazy racist demagogue.\u201d A third lauded her, \u201cExperience, intelligence, [and] tenacity\u201d while a fourth stated that she is the, \u201cMost dependable and experienced.\u201d Lastly, one respondent wrote, \u201cOf all the candidates since the start of the presidential campaign, Clinton is the one with the experience and ability to represent the United States best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Clinton supporters were less enthusiastic about her, but felt that Trump poses too great a threat;<\/strong> one writing, \u201cHilary has her problems (who doesn\u2019t), but she is most qualified to become our next president. Trump scares the hell out of me!\u201d Another simply put, \u201cNot Trump!\u201d In fact, Trump was mentioned by name in over a dozen of the Clinton\u00a0supporter\u2019s comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t love Clinton but it Trump must not win.<\/li>\n<li>To keep Trump from being elected<\/li>\n<li>Trump\u2019s personality.<\/li>\n<li>Fear of Donald Duck leading the world farther into hell, but I plan to chant all people make a wise voting decision, whatever will protect us &amp; the world\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Trump poses a unique threat to American democracy, and his foreign-policy positions that would kill thousands of innocent civilians are quite obviously against the precept of non-harm.<\/li>\n<li>better than trump<\/li>\n<li>Only alternative to Trump that has chances to win<\/li>\n<li>Not as bad as Trump<\/li>\n<li>Because President Trump would be very bad<\/li>\n<li>In opposition to Trump and recognizing that voting for Stein or Johnson is a wasted vote<\/li>\n<li>Its either her or Trump. She did take on many progressive issues in her platform and she has some good plans.<\/li>\n<li>Not trump. Allegedly cares about global warming<\/li>\n<li>Her views somewhat align with mine. Terrified of Trump.<\/li>\n<li>Trump is dangerous; Clinton is competent; both are flawed, but Trump much more so \u00a0\u2014 a BS artist, con-man, and demagogue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Other\u00a0Clinton supporters stated, \u201cIt\u2019s a holding my nose vote\u201d \u2013\u00a0\u201cLeast bad of the bad options\u201d and \u201cplatform, not person.\u201d<\/strong> This also matches a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qu.edu\/news-and-events\/quinnipiac-university-poll\/national\/release-detail?ReleaseID=2375\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Quinnipac University survey<\/a> showing that \u201cAmong Clinton supporters, 47 percent are mainly anti-Trump while 32 percent are pro- Clinton.\u201d The poll results also stated, \u201cIn this very negative race, 64 percent of Trump supporters say they are voting mainly anti-Clinton, while 25 percent say they are voting pro-Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jill Stein\u2019s supporters offered some of the following statements, focusing on the environment, progressive ideals, and war:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I like her ideas about healthcare, jobs, the military, student debt\u2026 pretty much everything.<\/li>\n<li>It is time for a woman president, one who puts human interests before business interests.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019d be fine with Clinton, but would prefer someone actually left-wing<\/li>\n<li>She has a focus on climate change<\/li>\n<li>Jill Stein places primary importance on environmental care<\/li>\n<li>Best policies, trustworthy<\/li>\n<li>Environment positions<\/li>\n<li>Because she\u2019s the only Progressive left in the race.<\/li>\n<li>End foreign wars, save environment, racial justice, healthcare for all<\/li>\n<li>This candidate and the party platform most represent my ideals.<\/li>\n<li>I am a Sanders supporter\u2026 Stein is just as good, though.<\/li>\n<li>Ethical positions, anti-war, holistic, egalitarian, green\/ environment, economic &amp; social justice. \u00a0She is completely competent to be President.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Supporters of Gary Johnson, who has seen increasing support nearly every month, had some of the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gary seems the least terrible.<\/li>\n<li>Smaller Government<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m a libertarian<\/li>\n<li>Johnson\u2019s socially liberal views have potential, while his more insane ideas about the size of government are unrealistic enough that they\u2019ll be stopped by bipartisan opposition<\/li>\n<li>Only real option at this point.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m voting for Gary Johnson so that the GOP has to contend with the Libertarian party in 2020.<\/li>\n<li>He is honest and humble<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And lastly, Trump\u2019s supporters had little to add, but one wrote, \u201cHe puts American interests first, not the interests of globalists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were a number of write-ins (Other), including six for Bernie Sanders and one for (hitherto unknown to me) Socialist candidate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rev16.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mimi Soltysik<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Have your say in the comments below.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month our numbers are up a bit, with\u00a0178\u00a0(self-selected, online, non-randomized)\u00a0respondents answering questions about their political preferences in the upcoming US Presidential race.
