He studied Social Anthropology,\u00a0undertaking doctoral and post-doctoral research in Nepal and\u00a0Thailand, making the film Birth of a Buddha. He spent thirty years in\u00a0Government Service, being posted to the British Embassy in\u00a0Washington DC in 2002. His portrait of the USA \u2013 The Cracked Bell:\u00a0America and the Afflictions of Liberty was published in 2010. Tristram\u00a0was appointed RCUK\u2019s External Champion for the Partnership in\u00a0Conflict, Crime and Security Research (PaCCS) in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979-80, Tristram Riley-Smith conducted ethnographic research\u00a0among Buddhist artists in the Kathmandu Valley, exploring the\u00a0beliefs and practices associated with god-sculptures. In 1984, he\u00a0travelled to Thailand \u2013 moving from a world of Tantric \u2018Vajrayana\u2019\u00a0Buddhism to that of <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Theravada Buddhism<\/a>, making the film Birth of\u00a0a Buddha. His focus was on the cultural life of the statues \u2013 the\u00a0social and symbolic value applied to these objects. He encountered\u00a0the impact of tourism on traditional art as well as the relationship\u00a0between Buddhism and older belief systems.
