That is out of date. It must end. So with some feudal influence, then eventually the lama institution creates lama politics [laughing].<\/p>\n<p>So, that is very bad.<\/p>\n<p>Lama politics\u2026 Lama individual disgrace, doesn\u2019t matter. But very bad impression about monastery or monk \u2013\u00a0<em>very bad<\/em>. So we must pay more attention.<\/p>\n<p>You should\u00a0<em>not say<\/em>, \u201coh this is my guru, whatever the guru says I must follow\u201d \u2013 that is <em>totally wrong<\/em>. The Buddha himself mentioned, \u201cmy teachings, you must examine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, if one particular lama says something,\u00a0<em>you examine<\/em>: whether this go well with the Buddha\u2019s teachings or the circumstances of society, then you must follow.<\/p>\n<p>If the lama says something, and you investigate, is not proper, then you should not follow the lama\u2019s teaching. Even the Dalai Lama\u2019s teaching: if you find some contradiction, then you should not follow: that is my teaching.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He then quotes [my favorite Tibetan philosopher] Tsongkhapa. The audio is quiet and muffled as his translator gives the English, but my guess is that it follows the same reasoning as the above. <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhism<\/a> from\u00a0India and then Tibet consistently emphasizes the importance of <em>responsibility<\/em>\u00a0and understanding one\u2019s own intentions as the root of its ethical system.<\/p>\n<p>Watch here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Inauguration of Seminar on \u2018Buddhism in Ladakh\u2019\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S6yzH-1si8o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionsroar.com\/dalai-lama-denounce-ethical-misconduct-by-buddhist-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lion\u2019s Roar<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In a talk last week, the Dalai Lama addressed recent allegations of misconduct in Buddhist communities. In July, famed Tibetan Buddhist teacher Sogyal Rinpoche\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionsroar.com\/letter-to-sogyal-rinpoche-from-current-and-ex-rigpa-members-details-abuse-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">was accused<\/a>\u00a0of longstanding abuse of many students. In response, Sogyal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionsroar.com\/rigpa-press-release-responds-to-allegations-of-abuses-by-sogyal-rinpoche\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">said he would be<\/a>\u00a0\u201ctaking a step back\u201d from teaching. The Dalai Lama addressed Sogyal Rinpoche in his talk, saying \u201cSogyal Rinpoche, my very good friend. Now he is disgraced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">..<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When misconduct occurs, the Dalai Lama advised, Buddhists should make the misconduct known. \u201cThese people do not follow Buddhist advice, <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist teachings<\/a>. Only thing you can do is make public \u2014 through newspaper, through radio. Make public.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Past documentation of Sogyal\u2019s abuses can be found in 2011 in the UK newspaper, the Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/belief\/2011\/jul\/01\/lama-sex-abuse-sogyal-rinpoche-buddhist\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The allegations raise a wider question: why are victims of sexual exploitation by charismatic religious leaders reluctant to denounce their abusers? In the Canadian documentary, Mimi highlights the Stockholm syndrome \u2013 a term used to describe the paradoxical reactions of individuals who bond with their abusers. \u201cThe person beating us, she says, \u201cis also the only one giving us affection \u2013 and food and a roof over our heads.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The author, Mary Finnegan writes there that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In my personal experience, there are two taboos in Buddhist organisations, both of which have merit and both of which can be used as manipulative tools. One of them is an injunction against gossip \u2013 useful when trying to establish a calm mental state, but also useful to prevent the circulation of critical comment.<\/p>\n<p>The second is\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline decorated-link\" title=\"Wikipedia: Samaya\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samaya\" target=\"_blank\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow\">samaya<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the bond of loyalty that is one of the key tenets of <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Tibetan Buddhism<\/a>. It supports the relationship between teacher and neophyte, but it can be deployed unscrupulously as a threat \u2013 break your samaya and attract dire consequences to yourself and your loved ones.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She concludes by saying that there is a cultural taboo against criticizing high lamas, one that even the Dalai Lama is bound by. Well, it seems that at last, with Sogyal, this is no longer the case. We can hope that others follow suit. As the Dalai Lama stated, if students publicize disgraced lamas publicly, the disgrace is the teacher\u2019s alone.
