Here are the excerpts and photos I breifly presented. It was a difficult position to be in \u2013 our University isn\u2019t officially recognizing the day and I didn\u2019t want to say too much or get too little. In the end I chose three statements, those by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tibet.com\/NewsRoom\/message1.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Dalai Lama<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wagingpeace.org\/articles\/2002\/11\/00_hanh_strike.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Thich Nhat Hanh<\/a>, and one by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpf.org\/html\/current_projects\/peace_pages\/9-11_archive\/archive\/bpf_9-11_statement.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Buddhist Peace Fellowship<\/a>, along with two <a href=\"http:\/\/san.beck.org\/Dhammapada.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">verses from the<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> Dhammapada<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tibet.com\/NewsRoom\/message1.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; border: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/320\/image008.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The Dalai Lama:<br>\n\u201cHuman conflicts do not arise out of the blue. They occur as a result of causes and conditions, many of which are within the protagonists\u2019 control\u2026. Violence undoubtedly breeds more violence.\u201d<\/h2>\n<h3><span><br>\nThich Nhat<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/1600\/image006.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/320\/image006.jpg\" alt=\"Thich Nhat Hanh\" border=\"0\"><\/a><span> Hanh:<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">\u201cThe <span>root of terrorism<\/span> is misunderstanding, intolerance, hatred, revenge and hopelessness. This root cannot be located by the military\u2026 <span>Each one of us has the seed of awakening and insight<\/span> within his or her heart. Let us help each other touch these seeds in ourselves so that everyone can have the courage to speak out. <\/span><br>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/1600\/image006.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><br>\n<\/a><\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpf.org\/html\/current_projects\/peace_pages\/9-11_archive\/archive\/bpf_9-11_statement.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/320\/image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Buddhist Peace Fellowship:<br>\n\u201c[The Buddha taught] that all beings are our family\u2026 If we are all one family\u2014victims, perpetrators, innocent, guilty\u2014then each of us is potentially capable of terrible and noble action. We must first taste our fear and anger without rashly retaliating and escalating the violence.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/1600\/image002.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/320\/image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>The Buddha on Violence<span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 180%;\"><br>\n<\/span><br>\n\u201cHatred is not overcome by hatred,<br>\nBy love alone is hatred overcome.<br>\nThis is an eternal law.\u201d<br>\n<em>Dhammapada v.5 <\/em><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>\u201cAll tremble at the rod.<br>\nAll fear death.<br>\nComparing others with oneself, one should neither strike nor cause to strike.\u201d<br>\n<em>Dhammapada v.129<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I asked the students to reflect on the <span>principles<\/span> contained in the statements, principles that we will discuss further as the course progresses. I also asked them to critically think about whether the Buddhist responses are\/were realistic and practical in today\u2019s world.
