It  never stops, never collects itself. It is not meditative thinking, not thinking  which contemplates the meaning that reigns in everything there is\u2026 Meditative  thinking demands of us that we engage ourselves with what, at first sight, does  not go together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Martin Heidegger, Memorial Address<br>found in  \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebreakthrough.org\/images\/Death_of_Environmentalism.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Death of  Environmentalism<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Calculative thinking is equivalent to <span style=\"font-style: italic\">vij\u00f1ana <\/span>in <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhism<\/a> \u2013 the mind which flutters on the surface of reality (\u201craces from one prospect to the next\u201d).  It is juxtaposed to <span style=\"font-style: italic\">praj\u00f1a<\/span>, which sinks into the calming depths of reality (\u201creigns in everything there is\u201d).  On the surface we cannot see beyond the next wave, especially when life is \u2018choppy.\u2019 In fact, the calculative mind can quickly get caught up in discerning \u2018this wave\u2019 from that one, dividing reality into chunks (nationalities, races, etc).
