Yet you <span style=\"font-style: italic\">always<\/span> have these problems, and oddly enough they tend to come up during retreats, especially in meditation (when you\u2019re supposed to be practicing open awareness). And, if you\u2019re lucky, somewhere along the way a solution or answer comes to you.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><u>Some interesting words from the scriptures:<\/u><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">(with implications on <a href=\"http:\/\/americanbuddhist.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/philosophy-wrestling-with-sartre-on.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a recent post on self<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSupreme mind, \u2014 in words, \u2014 can never be expressed:<\/span><br><span>And yet to all the trainees\u2019 needs it does respond;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Enslaved by words you fall into a hole.:<\/span><br><span>If you should go <\/span><u>against<\/u><span> the basic Truth \u2014 you come to a dead end.\u201d<\/span><br><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is how I understand Buddha-Nature (<span style=\"font-style: italic\">Supreme mind<\/span>). Any attempt we make to understand it with words or concepts is misguided. It is much like some Christian understandings of God (<span style=\"font-style: italic\">via negativa<\/span> \u2013 saying that God is beyond our <span style=\"font-style: italic\">mundane<\/span> language and concepts; to label Him as this or that is to defile His purity and transcendence).  \u201c<span style=\"font-style: italic\">Enslaved by words<\/span>\u201d describes me well much of the time! \ud83d\ude42  Truth is speechless, unspoken, unspeakable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(and reminding me of <a href=\"http:\/\/americanbuddhist.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/philosophy-wut-i-lernd-2day-or-airing.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my own recent fun with words<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you express by fancy words:<br>It is all stained.<br>The night encloses brightness:<br>And, at dawn, no light shines;\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More about words \ud83d\ude42 But also, the last two lines brought me back to my recent difficulties in school. My difficulties were more a matter of my attitude toward the experiences than the experiences themselves. I was criticized for a poor performance and my big fat <span style=\"font-weight: bold\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">ego<\/span><\/span> just wrenched itself around those critical words \u2013 it felt as if my stomach was being wrapped in knots around my heart and lungs. Just a couple weeks ago I had been praised for a very good performance, and I only laugh now as I see that my pain in the second instance was pretty evenly proportional to my elation in the first.<\/p>\n<p>So, lacking equanimity, lacking mindfulness, I was manipulated: <span style=\"font-style: italic\">up<\/span> the hedonic ladder in one instance, <span style=\"font-style: italic\">down down down<\/span> in the next.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\u2014<\/div>\n<p> It is not as if the retreat has fixed my above lacks \u2013 but I am aware of them now, quite clearly (which is why I can laugh about what last week had me on the verge of a panic attack).<\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/7907151-114223565363899548?l=americanbuddhist.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(beginning here) One doesn\u2019t go on retreat trying to \u2018work out\u2019 emotional\/personal\/intellectual issues or problems.
