{"id":753,"date":"2006-03-05T00:55:00","date_gmt":"2006-03-05T00:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/americanbuddhist\/2006\/03\/life-friends-in-low-places\/"},"modified":"2006-03-05T00:55:00","modified_gmt":"2006-03-05T00:55:00","slug":"life-friends-in-low-places","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/americanbuddhist\/2006\/03\/life-friends-in-low-places.html","title":{"rendered":"Life: Friends in Low Places"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>A couple of my good friends from England are now in India and, well, for the moment at least, I\u2019m <span style=\"font-style: italic\">not<\/span> jealous.<\/p>\n<p>A report from the first, Allison (another MA Student in <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a> Studies) contains the following (WARNING: GRAPHIC) description of a night near Delhi:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/1600\/allison_justin_bristol1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;float: left;cursor: pointer\" src=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/200\/allison_justin_bristol1.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/a>[first a nice part, at a bird sanctuary]<\/p>\n<p><span>It was dusk and they [the birds] were coming back from  feeding. It was absolutely amazing. I\u2019ll show you the pictures when we get back. There were birds everywhere, all different types perched on these trees that were growing out of the lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[now the \u2018middle-of-the-night\u2019 <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">GRAPHIC<\/span> rude awakening]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><span>\u2026I managed to eventually find a lightswitch, but there was a powercut. No streetlamps, it being as rural as rural gets so it was literally pitch black. I\u2019m feeling hotter than ever, and also dizzy\u2026 I collapse in front of the toilet, spray vomit everywhere, and piss myself as my muscles spasm to empty my stomach. I take off my pyjamas and try to wash my legs but the water hurts my skin.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[and in closing, (<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">not graphic<\/span>)]<span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Anyway, the upshot of this is that I eventually got better but I\u2019ve lost a fair bit of weight as I didn\u2019t eat for several days. Stuff is slipping off my waist and my bras keep trying to fall off!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>WOW\u2026 ohh\u2026 poor girl, but ending in such good spirits is so truly wonderful and remarkable. Yea for Allison! \ud83d\ude42 What a trooper. I love hearing her accounts of India, knowing the ups (good, cheap food and variety of cultures cohabitating <span style=\"font-style: italic\">mostly <\/span>peacefully) and the downs (from strange illnesses to week-long 24-hour festivals keeping her up all night) will hopefully make my own eventual journeys there that much more wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>And my other friend, Soorjya, is a native of Calcutta and returned there after earning a degree in Law in Bristol. NO projectile vomiting here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/1600\/aug-winsor.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;float: left;cursor: pointer;width: 200px\" src=\"https:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4804\/510\/1600\/aug-winsor.jpg\" alt=\"Soorjya and I in front of Winsor Castle, near London\" border=\"0\"><\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic\">\u2026 I\u2019ve spent much of the past couple of months catching<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\">up with friends and relatives and catching up with a city I abandoned 3yrs back\u2026\u2026\u2026things<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"> have changed drastically.     <\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the work front I\u2019ve joined a barrister\u2019s chamber to begin my career in law\u2026\u2026\u2026..or at least pretend that I\u2019m doing something constructive under the watchful eyes of my parents, much the way u keep propagating your quest with an \u201cMA\u201d in the form of trips to sun kissed beaches, lying next to naked women and giving them insights into \u201cnew age buddhism\u201d <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Will send you some of my family photos later and shall have the red carpet <span style=\"font-style: italic\"> laid out for you should you decide to come down.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure about the \u2018naked women\u2019 part, but I\u2019ll be very much hoping to see that red carpet not too far down the road. Soorjya and I had fantasized about going to Japan together to teach English to \u2018exotic women in kimonos\u2019 as he put it. But, alas, I had to settle for more school in Montana and a trip to Hawai\u2019i and he a job in Calcutta (after some vacation in \u2018<span>Pondicherry, an erstwhile French colony in the southern part of India<\/span>\u2018) .
