{"id":654001,"date":"2015-01-15T17:15:05","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T17:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/andygill\/?p=654001"},"modified":"2015-11-23T21:25:21","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T02:25:21","slug":"perry-noble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/andygill\/perry-noble\/","title":{"rendered":"Mega-Church Pastor that Allegedly said &#8220;N-Word&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The \u201cn-word\u201d is one of the<em>\u00a0<\/em>most divisive and\u00a0emotionally charged words\u00a0within our U.S. context.\u00a0I think social critic Ta-Nehisi Coates sums it up better than most stating\u00a0in The New York Times, \u201cIf you could choose one word to represent the centuries of bondage, the decades of terrorism, the long days of mass rape, the totality of white violence that birthed the black race in America, it would be \u2018n\u2014\u2013.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin Luther starts off the Small Catechism saying, \u201cDear God, what a misery I beheld!\u201d Around 500 years later, I look at our privileged versions of Church and echo similar sentiments.\u00a0It\u2019s bizarre to think that a religion in which\u00a0describes their theological position as Christocentric is known for everything but being\u00a0<em>centered\u00a0<\/em>on Christ. Pastors who sit back and say, \u201cAndy, it\u2019s not\u00a0<em>that\u00a0<\/em>bad\u2026\u201d are 100% correct. It\u2019s not\u00a0<em>that\u00a0<\/em>bad, in fact it\u2019s not bad at all\u2026\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>for them<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>So when <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/2015\/01\/03\/christian-megachurch-pastor-casually-says-nigga-during-christmas-eve-sermon\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">a video came out with mega-church pastor Perry Noble <em>seemingly<\/em> saying the n-word in his Christmas Eve Sermon<\/a><\/span>, I didn\u2019t expect much remorse from anyone, especially within predominantly white evangelicalism, including Noble. I want to say that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I believe that when Noble says, \u201cThis word was not in his heart\u2026\u201d he\u2019s telling the truth.<\/li>\n<li>That this was, although understandably\u00a0so, a misinterpretation of what he was actually saying.<\/li>\n<li>This is not the first offensively racist statement I\u2019ve heard from him on the topic of race [I\u2019ve listened to many of his sermons, and even gone and seen him speak live \u2013 all that to say, this is <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not<\/span><\/strong> the first racially insensitive statement I\u2019ve heard from him].<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Hearing via <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/itsandygill\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Facebook<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span>from those who attend the church, that Noble did \u201cin fact\u201d apologize. I was happy to hear this,\u00a0<em>until<\/em> I actually heard his \u201capology.\u201d Which played out more so like a #SorryNotSorry. My first listen to the short clip released by <a href=\"newspring.cc\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Newspring Church<\/a>, his apology didn\u2019t sit right with me. I think\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/theology-of-ferguson\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Jake Dockter, social activists<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/jake-dockter\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Huffington Post contributor<\/span><\/a>, sums it up pretty well in a recent email to me stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>First he mocks those folks online for critiquing.<\/p>\n<div>Then, he denies it was \u201cin his heart.\u201d Then he \u201capologizes\u201d and then turns it around in a really underhanded way. \u201cIf you watched that and you felt like thats what I said\u2026\u201d puts it on us rather than on him. then he says, \u201cthats all we are gonna say, we are gonna move on cause we have people to reach for jesus.\u201d as if justice and caring for this is a side issue\u2026 problematic [sic].<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Before I go on, I want to be clear that this is\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>not<\/strong><\/span> me \u201churling insults\u201d let alone \u201ccasting stones\u201d this is me simply calling for accountability. This is larger than this one moment of misunderstanding.\u00a0<strong>The Privileged Evangelical\u2019s mega-church pastor, their silence on the issue of racial tension has been deafening<\/strong>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.godlovesuganda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">They\u2019ll\u00a0colonize Uganda but not show solidarity in North America<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0Their tactic is evasion and if that doesn\u2019t work they result to a <em>forceful<\/em> abusive means of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">coercion<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w21YA-G3zBg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jake, a white male, who politely asked Noble to sit down and further talk about this topic over the phone, Skype, or via email was declined by Newspring Church\u2019s PR team.\u00a0It\u2019s weird with Christian celebrities there is a higher level of arrogance to some of them that I\u00a0would only expect to be found in people like Madonna, Prince, or Jesus, you know the people who at one point or another thought they were God [or in Jesus\u2019 case, was God].<\/p>\n<p>But all jokes aside one\u2019s \u201cmessiah complex\u201d begins to get sketchy when it impedes upon one\u2019s ability to maintain their sense of humility. Are we not all called to be\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>above reproach<\/em><\/span><\/strong>? This is the problem with homogenous church <em>leadership<\/em>. When the people keeping you accountable don\u2019t understand the people being wounded, well, you get what\u2019s happening within many, but of course not all, US mega-churches \u2013 patriarchy, racism, and hate [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/andygill\/revolution-of-niceness\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">that comes in the form of nice, or passive aggressive<\/span><\/a>].<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>White pastor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/perrynoble\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">@perrynoble<\/a> used \u201cn-word\u201d in sermon.No apology then releases post with him as victim. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/nobleapology?src=hash\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">#nobleapology<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KilljoyProphets\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">@KilljoyProphets<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suey_park\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">@suey_park<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Theology of Ferguson (@FaithInFerguson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FaithInFerguson\/status\/553258685167042560\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">January 8, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can\u2019t help but mention that the\u00a0<em>day<\/em>\u00a0after this debacle, Noble\u00a0posted an article titled,\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"https:\/\/perrynoble.com\/blog\/not-afraid-to-take-a-hit\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Not Afraid to Take a Hit<\/a><\/span>.\u201d This would be fine if he was in fact \u201ctaking a hit.\u201d The\u00a0irony or rather, the level of incompetence it takes for a North American, Heterosexual, white, Christian, privileged male to say he\u2019s \u201ctaking a hit\u201d or even slightly insinuate he is somehow being persecuted is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>beyond insulting<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to the rest of the world.\u00a0But even if he was taking hits being unafraid of\u00a0getting \u201chit\u201d doesn\u2019t mean you become unafraid of being <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">abusive<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ignorant<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">offensive<\/span>, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>irreverent<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>If you\u2019re a heterosexual, white, privileged Pastor claiming you\u2019re the victim, you need to know you\u2019re not the victim, you\u2019re the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 andy gill (@itsandygill) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/itsandygill\/status\/555158012403273729\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">January 14, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I want to be clear, Perry Noble is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em><\/span> the\u00a0<em>victim\u00a0<\/em>and is certainly <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>not<\/strong><\/span><\/em> part of the \u201cpersecuted minority.\u201d\u00a0He\u2019s a mega-church pastor, on the evangelical speaking circuit, living\u00a0within a first world context. <em><strong>He is PRIVILEGED<\/strong><\/em>. And should take note from his Uncle Ben because, \u201cWith great power comes\u00a0<em>great\u00a0<\/em>responsibility.\u201d Seemingly needless to say \u2013 but I\u2019ve learned on the issue of race the most basic levels of racial understanding are necessary to say \u2013 that with great ignorance from leaders with too much power comes comments like these from people who follow and <del>listen<\/del> worship\u00a0them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/facebook.com\/itsandygill\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-653989 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/604\/2015\/01\/racist-vitriolic-comments.jpg\" alt=\"racist-vitriolic-comments\" width=\"650\" height=\"81\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So <em>please<\/em> know that I agree that pastors are people too. I understand this more than most, as <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6rqOMwTvIlw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">I am a former pastor from\u00a0a larger evangelical \u201cmega-church.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>But when we as pastors do something wrong and then play the victim, due to the consequential repercussions, garnering more care and attention than the people we victimize [knowingly or unknowingly], <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">we then step out of our role as pastor and into the roll of the\u00a0oppressor<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Preaching and teaching is a privilege\u00a0that should never\u00a0be taken lightly. Whether or not you have a church of 30 or a congregation of 20,000. What we do and say as religious leaders should be handled with a level of fear and trembling.\u00a0Asking Noble to apologize, <em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">without<\/span><\/strong><\/em> passively blaming the victim or misinterpreters, for <em>seemingly<\/em> saying the \u201cn-word\u201d is a completely <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">rational,<\/span> and <em>even<\/em>\u00a0biblical, move. He\u2019s a public leader that is human and makes mistakes. Nobody is questioning his motive [at least I\u2019m not].\u00a0<strong>I, personally, don\u2019t think he should be fired but I do think he should be humble<\/strong>; a pastor who lacks humility and believes that because they are now an evangelical \u201ccelebrity\u201d they\u2019re some how exempt from reproach, in my opinion, should in fact <em>temporarily<\/em> step down \u2013 John Piper did this, and I respect that, I don\u2019t remotely agree with his teachings but I respect his humility in confessing his pride [and because of this I\u2019m willing to listen more often\u00a0and more\u00a0closely\u00a0to him, regardless of my lack of agreeing\u00a0with him].<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t have to be a big deal, but this does point to a bigger problem. I\u2019ve said already in this post, and I\u2019ve said many times before this post, <strong>the evangelical pastor who is not just silent, but inactive on the issue of justice for the poor, powerless, and oppressed is damaging to the very mission of Christ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. Frankly, I have yet to engage in a direct action campaign that was \u2018well timed\u2019 in the view of those who have not suffered unduly from the disease of segregation. For years now I have heard the word \u2018Wait!\u2019 It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity.
