The Representative, who is also an ordained minister in the Christian and Missionary Alliance, has been confronting Christian nationalism after a display was set up earlier this month in the Capitol building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunwell\u2019s stand on X (formerly Twitter), which has generated thousands of comments and over 7 million views, has directly challenged Christian nationalism\u2014the ideology blending white evangelical religious and ethnic norms with U.S. nationalism. In doing so he has shown that Christian nationalism is wrong on two essential fronts. First, it gets democracy wrong. Second, it gets Jesus wrong.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103340\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103340\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/168\/2023\/12\/Satanic-Display_AB-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103340\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/168\/2023\/12\/Satanic-Display_AB-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Dunwell X Post image of Satanic Temple display in Iowa Capitol\" width=\"768\" height=\"427\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dunwell X Post image of Satanic Temple display in Iowa Capitol<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The frenzy began when Dunwell stated on December 8 that displays at the Capitol are available to any group\u2014even a satanic temple\u2014as long as they complete the appropriate application process. While the display was described as personally objectionable to him, Dunwell underscored his priority for the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religious expression. The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdunwell\/status\/1733191110858559506\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">original post<\/a>, which received 4.5 million views within days, highlights the political and theological failures of Christian nationalism.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As many of you have become aware, last week a display was erected at the Iowa Capitol by the Satanic Temple of Iowa. As I have responded to concerns from Iowans about the display, I wanted to share with you how the display came to be and my response.<\/p>\n<p>How did it happen?<br>\n\u2022 The\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8ODJXCxu9Y\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/8ODJXCxu9Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Jon Dunwell (@jdunwell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdunwell\/status\/1733191110858559506?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">December 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Political Failure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsurprisingly, a large number of respondents to Rep. Dunwell demanded the display be removed. One influential X account wrote, \u201cAnd right here is the fundamental flaw with \u2018religious liberty for all\u2019 that this country was founded on. When Jesus Christ returns to establish his Divine Theocracy, there will be no religious liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such statements line up with what scholars of Christian nationalism have observed for some time now. Sociologists Andrew Whitehead and Sam Perry, for example, measure Christian nationalism with the following survey items (among others) in their book <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=CCNsEAAAQBAJ&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PR1&amp;dq=taking+america+back+for+god&amp;ots=m58puby7v0&amp;sig=muEe9JiJ6wyxZKqd0wMz6fx4Uic#v=onepage&amp;q=taking%20america%20back%20for%20god&amp;f=false\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Taking America Back for God<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The federal government should enforce a strict separation of church and state<\/li>\n<li>The federal government should allow the display of religious symbols in public spaces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Iowa case, opponents of Rep. Dunwell argue the state should blur lines of separation by allowing some religious displays but not others, giving the state power to adjudicate which religions qualify and which do not. Christian nationalists, who tend to agree that religious symbols should be displayed in public places, typically mean only <em>Christian<\/em>symbols should be allowed, like nativities and the ten commandments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the case of a satanic display may seem extreme, it is reasonable to ask what the difference is between this display and displays by more mainstream religious groups such as ones erected by a Hindu temple or an Islamic mosque. Not all Christian nationalists would oppose these, but anti-democratic Christian nationalists on Rep. Dunwell\u2019s feed have gone so far as to advocate for the \u201cobliteration\u201d of all non-Christian displays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his part, Rep. Dunwell has staunchly defended the right of any religious group to erect displays at the Iowa Capitol. \u201cIt\u2019s really not that radical,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdunwell\/status\/1733927548340297778\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he said<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t want the government dictating, approving, or regulating religious expression. I would rather have an evil blasphemous display or no display at all than have the state dictate what they think is appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It\u2019s really not that radical. Jon Dunwell (@jdunwell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdunwell\/status\/1733927548340297778?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">December 10, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Theological Failure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another failure of Christian nationalism is revealed in flawed theological assumptions; most notably its failure to comprehend the <em>kingdom of God<\/em>, which Jesus preached on more than any other topic. Christian nationalists often liken America to the historic nation of Israel, believing it possesses a similar special status as a \u201cchosen\u201d nation. Whitehead and Perry measure this view with statements like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The federal government should declare the United States a Christian nation<\/li>\n<li>The success of the United States is part of God\u2019s plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agreement with these claims stems from a misunderstanding of God\u2019s kingdom as similar to nations or kingdoms of the world. If God\u2019s kingdom is a theocratic state like ancient Israel and can be established here in the United States, the reasoning goes that it is theologically justifiable to tear down non-Christian displays (and to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/newvangelicals\/status\/1592970106858278912?lang=en\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">jail blasphemers<\/a>, hold religious tests for public office, and more).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Stephen Wolfe, Author of the Case for Christian Nationalism, openly says that under CN\u2019s rule, women can\u2019t be in charge because they are too empathetic and inclusive, \u201cblasphemy is punished\u201d and \u201catheism is crushed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the freedom they talk about. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EBKzL3joLt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/EBKzL3joLt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The New Evangelicals (@newvangelicals) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/newvangelicals\/status\/1592970106858278912?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">November 16, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many detractors reacting to Rep. Dunwell specifically cited biblical texts from the Old Testament about tearing down idols as means of justification. One named the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ArlenWms\/status\/1734361540034187410\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">theological heresy<\/a> flat out: \u201cAmerica has a covenant relationship with God\u201d \u2013 and as such is justified in promoting only Christian symbols.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Jon, we are responsible to God for what we do in the world, what we condone and what we engage against.<\/p>\n<p>America has a covenant relationship with God. It is not the right of Americans to use our halls of government for anti-American propaganda. Seems you need to change your laws.\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Arlen Williams (@ArlenWms) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ArlenWms\/status\/1734361540034187410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">December 11, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Understanding the Kingdom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theologian Howard Snyder has written extensively about these matters in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Models_of_the_Kingdom.html?id=HB4RAQAAIAAJ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Models of the Kingdom<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>There he identifies concrete historical examples of the many ways Christians have conceived of the kingdom in various times and places. His typology classifies perceptions of the kingdom as a series of continuums which contain several key polarities. One such polarity is whether the kingdom of God is found primarily \u201chere\u201d on earth or \u201cout there\u201d in the heavens. Other key polarities ask: Does the kingdom reside within individuals or is it located in society? Is it available in the present or will it come sometime in the future? Is it brought about by human action or only by the action of God?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potent political ramifications are wrapped up in how any given church or religious movement answers these questions. Christian nationalists, for their part, are likely to view the kingdom of God as something that <em>they<\/em> can bring about, that is <em>here<\/em> and <em>now<\/em>, and is embodied in a combination of a <em>political state<\/em> and <em>Christianized culture<\/em>. To these claims, Rep. (and pastor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdunwell\/status\/1733499839512486362\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dunwell astutely responds<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have found myself shocked at what I believe is a misunderstanding of basic Biblical concepts of the Kingdom of Jesus. It is not a physical kingdom defined by boundaries and nationality. It is not the re-creation of the nation of Israel in the United States of America! It is a spiritual kingdom led by Jesus, filled with those who have been transformed by His Spirit\u2019s presence in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As I continue to hear from Christians on the issue of the Satanic Temple display at the Iowa Capitol, I have found myself shocked at what I believe is a misunderstanding of basic Biblical concepts of the Kingdom of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It is not a physical kingdom defined by boundaries and\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Jon Dunwell (@jdunwell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdunwell\/status\/1733499839512486362?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">December 9, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Strong and Weak Faith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus himself defined the kingdom as something that comes through God\u2019s agency, not our own. While evangelicals often speak of \u201cbringing\u201d or \u201cbuilding\u201d God\u2019s kingdom, Jesus favored verbs like \u201centering,\u201d \u201cinheriting,\u201d and \u201creceiving\u201d (e.g., Mark 10:15), which are more passive in nature. The kingdom <em>happens <\/em>as Christ\u2019s followers align themselves with God\u2019s ways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that regard, Jesus did not tear down temples or shrines to other gods, nor did the Apostle Paul, his most famous first-century follower. In fact, Paul, who had a larger geographic footprint to his ministry than Jesus (spanning the whole Mediterranean), spent even more time among \u201cpagans\u201d than Jesus himself. He used logic and rhetoric to persuade others of Jesus\u2019 message, not the violence of defacing temples and tearing down idols.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such record of Paul\u2019s activity in Greece is found in 1 Corinthians 8, and is instructive in the Christian nationalist attacks on Rep. Dunwell naming him \u201cweak,\u201d \u201cgutless,\u201d and \u201ccowardly.\u201d In that text Paul addresses relatively new Christians in the city of Corinth about eating food previously sacrificed to pagan idols.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astonishingly, Paul teaches that eating such food is fair game: \u201cAn idol is nothing at all in the world,\u201d he says. \u201cThere is but one God from whom all things come\u201d (v. 4, 6). For those of strong faith, Paul states, the idol is nothing. But he acknowledges there are also those in Corinth with weak faith: \u201cNot everyone possesses this knowledge.\u201d By eating this food, \u201ctheir conscience is weak and is defiled\u201d (v. 7).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is exactly the tension playing out in the backlash against Rep. Dunwell\u2019s stand. A weak faith fears the Satanic Temple display, like a Corinthian afraid to eat meat sacrificed to an idol. A weak faith insufficiently absorbs the knowledge of God. Instead, it trembles over powerless idols. A weak faith cannot abide the tension, or\u2014to return to political terms\u2014pluralism. Christian nationalism is a weak faith. It may even be \u201cgutless\u201d and \u201ccowardly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>From a Spark to a Flame<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial furor over the Satanic Temple display largely involved Rep. Dunwell interacting with commenters on X as he spoke eloquently of religious freedom and God\u2019s kingdom. Since then, more voices\u2014big ones\u2014have jumped in, particularly after the display was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/u-s-world\/2023\/12\/15\/24003160\/who-is-michael-cassidy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">vandalized by Michael Cassidy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RonDeSantis\/status\/1735671610617499886\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a>, \u201cSatan has no place in our society and should not be recognized as a \u2018religion\u2019 by the federal government.\u201d He also promised to help cover Cassidy\u2019s legal defense.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Satan has no place in our society and should not be recognized as a \u201creligion\u201d by the federal government. We are different. We choose not to fight our battles in the same way\u2026As an American I reject the concept of Christian nationalism on constitutional grounds.
