\nIn Jeannie Blackmer\u2019s<\/a> beautiful devotional, Talking to Jesus: A Fresh Perspective on Prayer<\/a><\/em>, she reveals 21 key encounters people had with God in the flesh. In each section, Blackmer includes a description of the encounter, a \u201cPersonal Response\u201d section on how this encounter can impact our prayer life, a \u201cReflection\u201d section filled with verses for personal meditation, and an \u201cObservation\u201d section with thoughtful questions for the reader to consider. Each reading is fairly short in length and helps the reader to unpack the true meaning of each encounter with Jesus.<\/p>\n

As I read each devotion, I love how Blackmer brings the encounters with Jesus to life by using vivid details and illustrations. She really knows how to draw readers into what each person was probably thinking and feeling during their encounter with Jesus. For example, when Blackmer described the men bringing the paralytic to Jesus (Matthew 9:2), she included details like this found on page 29\u2026<\/p>\n

\n\u201cDaniel wiped the sweat from his forehead with a cloth before the salty liquid could run into his eyes. It had been a long, exhausting day. He looked at Levi lying on the make-shift stretcher on the ground. Levi\u2019s eyes were closed. Some sweat had accumulated on his face too, so Daniel wiped it away. Levi opened his eyes. \u201cAre we there?\u201d he asked. \u201cYes,\u201d Daniel gave Levi\u2019s arm a squeeze. He meant it to be reassuring but then remembered Levi couldn\u2019t feel anything from is neck done. Their other three friends had wandered over to the well to fill up their jugs. It had taken most of the day to carry Levi here, and they were all thirsty and tired, yet anxious and excited to see what would happen next.\u201d<\/p>\n

Can\u2019t you just picture yourself there? After each description, Blackmer unpacks the significance of Jesus\u2019 response to them. With each encounter, it became clearer to me how down-to-earth Jesus really is. His response always met each person or group of people right where they were in life. He never used words that wouldn\u2019t resonate with them personally. His words broke through any barrier that society may have placed on those people\u2013ordinary folks like you and me. Most of all, His words opened up their hearts and minds to His great love and how faith in Him changes everything.<\/p>\n
