Do you get days off from work for Buddhist<\/a> holidays?\u00a0Buddhism\u2019s relatively lacking in (free of?) singling out special days (except, perhaps the annual Buddha-day celebration known as\u00a0Vesak<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The present moment is always cause for special awareness.\u00a0 (Go ahead \u2026 please, take a few conscious breaths. See for yourself: this moment is<\/em> a wonderful moment.)<\/p>\n

Worth celebrating too is how Buddhist teachings<\/a> and practice find their roots in American culture (as \u201cBuddhism\u201d but also as \u201cmindfulness,\u201d \u201cemotional intelligence,\u201d aspects of \u201ccognitive science\u201d and healthy food, zen hospices,\u00a0 etc).<\/p>\n

In 1993,\u00a0Tricycle<\/em><\/a>, the first American Buddhist glossy magazine, inaugurated\u00a0Change Your Mind Day<\/em> \u2014 an opportunity for people to gather in public for teachings from various traditions. \u00a0The new movement is still catching on across the country.<\/p>\n

For anyone reading these words,\u00a0Tricycle <\/em>this week is hosting\u00a0Change Your Mind Day online<\/a> with teachings by Stephen Batchelor,\u00a0 Gehlek Rimpoche, Clark Strand [streaming video], plus links to various local campgrounds.<\/p>\n

To consider studying one\u2019s own mind was, 50 years ago, a far-out concept. Now we hear we can train the mind and change our brain.\u00a0 The head is round to allow for change in the direction of thought.\u00a0 A new mind can spell a new world.<\/p>\n
