Dear Rothoof,<\/span><\/p>\n I see from your admission form that you have a male subject this time \u2014 young, idealistic, and stuffed with simplistic insights into what\u2019s Right and Wrong. Given that you\u2019re under the watchful eye of the Disciplinary Board, the Probation Office, <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> the independently contracted Anti-Incompetence League, I thought it judicious to\u00a0give you a few\u00a0words of advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n You have an advantage concerning the youth of your prey. He thinks he is about to go out into the world and experience \u201clife.\u201d Your uncle Mammon has helped the humans spend billions of dollars in advertising and movie-making to promote this idea: Do not tarnish his reputation by ignoring it. Let your human believe that life is something \u201cout there,\u201d around the corner, and always about to happen. Never let him suspect that life is, at bottom, the same for him as it is for us \u2014 not waiting to happen but <\/span>now<\/span><\/i>. Let him believe that \u201cthe real world\u201d is always somewhere other than his present location. Never let him suspect that the real world is always\u00a0<\/span>exactly<\/span> where he is.<\/span><\/p>\n On its own, this hardly helps Our Glorious Rebellion: The view of life being \u201cout there\u201d rather than \u201cright now\u201d is a petty falsehood that could just as easily make an arctic explorer of your man as any kind of appetizer for our refined, angelic palates. But it\u00a0prepares the ground for a far more malicious seed: If real life is \u201cout-there\u201d and \u201cnot-yet,\u201d it stands to reason that all that is \u201cin-here\u201d and \u201calready-present\u201d is <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> real life.<\/span><\/p>\n Now there is much experienced as \u201cin-here\u201d and \u201cpresent\u201d in the male human heart that should \u2014 for our sake \u2014 remain unquestioned and unchecked by outside experience. His prejudices, idiocies, natural dispositions towards selfishness and ingratitude; his racisms and sexisms; his quick\u00a0judgment that a beggar is probably addicted to drugs or involved in some highly-organized beggar gang; his immediate consent to any article beginning with the words \u201cscientists predict\u201d; his unchecked belief that the female breast is a pornographic object unassociated with very small humans; his inability to be happy without a comparative evaluation of the happiness of other humans; his assumption that he cannot provide for himself, but must, by nature, rely on hordes of experts for his daily bread<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 keep all of this. We\u2019ve worked hard on this set\u00a0of\u00a0prejudices for the North American Campaign. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n No, Rothoof, I am not asking you to inspire your human to check his <\/span>prejudices<\/span><\/i> against life-experience. Have him\u00a0question his moral\u00a0<\/em><\/span>facultie<\/span><\/em>s<\/span><\/i>. Have him degrade everything experienced as \u201cin-here\u201d in favor of the experience-doling wisdom of \u201cout-there.\u201d <\/span>Since humans experience their conscience, value-sense, and tradition as unveiling right and wrong \u201cin here,\u201d it\u2019s a simple trick to have them degrade their own capacity for moral wisdom by seeing it as lacking the quality of realism; part of an inborn prejudice; cold and abstract as opposed to the warmth \u201creal experience.\u201d\u00a0It is far easier to make a man feel childish<\/span><\/i> for being virtuous,\u00a0<\/span>inexperienced<\/i>\u00a0in his moral intuitions and unrealistic<\/span><\/i> in his noble qualities than to draw him plainly and simply to greed, envy, and anger. After all, vices exert far less pull than you\u2019d suppose. Evil, for whatever reason, does not attract the humans on its own. The immoral is best reached by casting suspicion on the moral \u2014 and there is no easier route than to have a man suspect that all his goodness is something detached from \u201creal life.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Of course, you should not let your subject consider what in Hell he means by \u201creal,\u201d and how, in Lucifer\u2019s name, the \u201creal\u201d includes things he sees when goes to government-school rather than words whispered by his parents; things he sees on TV rather than the thrilling of his moral consciousness over some act of courage, patience, chastity, and so forth. The \u201creal world\u201d should simply mean \u201call that comes from out there,\u201d fantastically realer then \u201call the stuff that comes from in here.\u201d <\/span><\/span>Work this method well and, usually by the mid-point of your subject\u2019s collegiate career, the mere fact of something coming from \u201cout-there\u201d is enough to give it the glow of truth and moral goodness. \u201cLife experiences\u201d will become good in their own right. Your subject will not question whether he <\/span>ought<\/span><\/i> to have this or that experience \u2014 he will see it all as a learning opportunity given by \u201creal life.\u201d We have seduced many otherwise frustratingly good Christians with this Method. They\u2019ll often say, speaking of some evil act, \u201cwell thank God you had the <\/span>experience<\/span><\/i>\u201d or \u201cat least you <\/span>learned<\/span><\/i> something\u201d \u2014 as if a plus side of immorality was an increase in realism. You see, Rothoof, their tacit acquiescence to the idea that, in the end, the obscurely-defined \u201creal life\u201d is a better teacher than virtue, conscience, or the even Enemy Himself? They\u00a0believe that there is a realism that only our<\/em> education can bring \u2014 a wisdom only attainable through the ignorance of sin and a knowledge only available to the degraded.<\/span><\/p>\n Degrade away, Rothoof. Let your human believe that he is to be shaped by life rather than shape it, to mirror the real world rather than change it and to accept it as it stands rather than to hold it up to the light of a higher judgment.
