Two Lesbians Raised a Child and This Is What They Got\u2026 <\/a>I cited a study that claimed a\u00a0\u201cdisproportionate percentage\u201429 percent\u2014of the adult children of homosexual parents had been specifically subjected to sexual molestation by that homosexual parent, compared to only 0.6 percent of adult children of heterosexual parents having reported sexual relations with their parent\u2026. Having a homosexual parent(s) appears to increase the risk of incest with a parent by a factor of about 50\u2033 (P. Cameron and K. Cameron, \u201cHomosexual Parents,\u201d Adolescence 31 (1996): 772.).<\/p>\nWhat has been brought to my attention is that the statistic was based on a study group of only 17, which is nowhere near enough to be considered as a legitimate claim. I apologize for not being aware of this, and have removed the statistic.<\/p>\n
This issue of\u00a0inaccurate\u00a0claims is a characteristic of the gay parenting studies in general, on both sides of the debate. In a study published in the \u00a0Journal of Divorce and Remarriage, \u00a0P.\u00a0Belcastro et al. reviewed fourteen studies on homosexual parenting\u00a0according to accepted scientific standards. Their \u201cmost impressive\u00a0finding\u201d was that \u201call of the studies lacked external validity. The conclusion that there are no significant differences in children raised by lesbian mothers versus heterosexual mothers is not supported by the\u00a0published research data base.\u201dP. A. Belcastro et al., \u201cA Review of Data Based Studies Addressing the Affects of Homosexual\u00a0Parenting on Children\u2019s Sexual and Social Functioning,\u201d Journal of Divorce and Remarriage 20\u00a0(1993): 105, 106.<\/p>\n
In general, we do not have definitive statistics on the effects of gay parenting. What we do know, however, and what has confirmed time and time again by excellent, peer-reviewed research is how absolutely essential it is for a child to be raised by a mother and a father. This is why I am against gay marriage.
