Usually we’ll do the bedtime story, prayers, and I’ll tuck the girls in bed with a couple songs and a million kisses, but last night I was still pretty hoarse and my chest and throat were sore, so I laid in bed with the girls and let them sing to me.

Charlotte sang Jesus Loves Me and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Sienna, however, made up her own song about “how much God loves us.” It went something like this.

The Lord is God and He loves us so much. After a few minutes, Sienna began quietly whispering the story of Joan of Arc in my ear. (Her knowledge of Joan of Arc has been greatly supplemented by the History Teachers.)

This is how that story went.

Joan was a peasant girl who lived in France a long time ago. God called her to lead her people into battle when their future was dark. She had armor and a sword and she got shot with an arrow but still kept battling. Then she let the bad people take her and they burned her to ham.

I’ll admit that I burst out laughing at that. After a few minutes of painful coughing following my ill-advised laughing fit, I managed to explain that people get burned to ashes, and only pigs are ham.

And yet, I still really like her version of the story.

Sienna at St. Peter’s circa 2008 Last night, like the night before, was full of soup and tea with honey and lemon and Dancing with the Stars.
