Oy. Last night, something terrible happened: two of my children refused to sleep. All night long. And in a novel turn of events, instead of punching the Ogre in the arm until he got up and dealt with said offspring, I got up myself. The baby was sleeping peacefully, the Ogre was sleeping peacefully, and I uncharacteristically decided that perhaps I should forego the siren song of REM sleep to let my poor husband get some rest.<\/p>\n

Oh. My. Gosh. I feel like I\u2019m swimming underwater today. This is horrible! Is this what normal mothers feel like, all the time? I mean, I co-sleep so I don\u2019t have to lose a second of sleep, and the Ogre gets up with the older kids so he doesn\u2019t have to deal with me if I\u2019ve lost a second of sleep, so it\u2019s pretty unusual for me to be running on four hours of sleep. I\u2019m actually kind of giddy with the half-drunken feeling of sleep deprivation mingled with the righteous satisfaction of personal sacrifice, but I bet that wears off pretty quickly for moms who do this every night. All I can so to those mothers is this: you are a better woman than I am. But exponentially <\/i>better. You\u2019re amazing. And I truly hope I never have to walk another mile in your shoes.<\/p>\n

So without further ado, here are this week\u2019s quick takes.<\/p>\n

the Ever-Teacher is going to buy me a grammar book, because he\u2019s tired of sending me emails making fun of my terrible grammar mistakes every time he reads my blog. So you can all breathe a collective sigh of relief, knowing that the days when I pick a random form of \u201clay\u201d because I have no idea which one is correct are coming to a close.<\/div>\n

has insisted that I come clean. Remember this post<\/a>? Yesterday the Ogre walked into the bedroom as I was leaning over Liam and crooning, \u201cYou\u2019re just the cutest baby in the whole wide world, yes you are!\u201d Oxytocin makes liars of the best of us. (Although since I wasn\u2019t actually breastfeeding at the time I guess I\u2019m just a liar, period.)<\/div>\n

I pulled out our nativity set. It\u2019s the only Christmas decoration we\u2019re putting out this year since we\u2019ll be in Texas most of the month, so I let Sienna unwrap and arrange the figurines. At one point I stopped folding laundry to watch her play and was absolutely astounded at the scene that unfolded before me. Thomas the Tank Engine swooped down into the barn and rescued the Virgin Mary from terrible approaching danger, which turned out to be the Ninja Turtles as played by the three wise men and Joseph. I\u2019m pretty sure the villainy of the Ninja Turtles is a direct result of my attempt to explain to Sienna what a vigilante is, and why it\u2019s not really good thing. And after all, Thomas truly is a really useful engine.<\/div>\n

I went to see Harry Potter. Alone. It was just\u2026bliss. Not only was the movie absolutely fantastic, but I was alone! It was great. I\u2019ve gotta say, though, that although several casting choices have irked me through the years, not a single one is as irritating as Fleur Delacour.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Gah. She drove me crazy in the fourth movie, and again in her brief reappearance in this last one. She\u2019s supposed to be a veela, for Pete\u2019s sake! And it\u2019s not that she\u2019s not pretty enough, she\u2019s just the wrong kind of pretty\u2026a veela is supposed to be ethereal, mysterious, glowing, intoxicating. Like a siren. This chick looks like she just stepped off the cover of French Vogue<\/i>. She\u2019s too angular, too\u2026model-y. Not exactly the same thing. Is anyone else with me on this?<\/div>\n
On the other hand, Bill Nighy was an awesome choice. I love Bill Nighy, and while I would never have thought to cast him as Scrimgeour I think it was a great move. Not since I watched Alan Rickman play Colonel Brandon has a casting choice filled me with so much glee.<\/div>\n

I made a really important discovery. It turns out that if you add equal parts chocolate chips and holiday mint M&Ms; to standard chocolate chip cookies, the results are outstanding.<\/div>\n

No, not really. They\u2019re not outstanding, they pretty much taste like you would imagine they would taste, but I got really excited about it in an effort to convince Sienna that these would be so much better to bring to her class for her birthday thanthe Hello Kitty cake pops I promised her I\u2019d make in July, before I had three children.<\/div>\n

She believed me, so today we took cookies to her class. I feel both relieved and guilty.<\/div>\n

The Ogre and I spent a little while flipping through Calvin and Hobbes comics. I love Calvin and Hobbes. I really hope our kids end up that creative and infuriating. Then I\u2019ll know I\u2019ve done something right.<\/div>\n
