Even in times when we think we are sacrificing our own happiness for the sake of our loved ones, we are still choosing happiness because we are choosing love. We know that we could never be truly happy otherwise.

That said, it follows that there is a right way to love.

If we love right, we choose the ultimate kind of happiness. But if we love wrong, we find only misery; we bring only misery.

There are some people who think that they are loving themselves by being selfish. But they are wrong. For the selfish person is not loving oneself the right way. And since one is without love, one is without happiness as well.

If we are selfish, we think that we can find happiness even if we hurt other people.

But that is not true. We may just fool ourselves into believing that illusion, but deep within us, we know we could never be truly happy. We can’t be happy because we can’t have peace.

Truth will always follow us wherever we may go and however we may try to ignore it. This truth will tell us again and again whether we are walking the right path or not.

The remembrance then of our evil deeds will always follow us. The truth that we have chosen not to love.

If we can only admit it, the truth is that all our worst sufferings in life come from our transgressions against love.

While we may suffer emotionally or feel physical pain, there is no greater suffering than that of having committed this evil.

We wound our souls each time we sin against love.

Love is the one thing that must abide in our souls so that we may continue living. Without it, we walk as dead people having no life in us.

If we want to live forever, we must never forsake love. Love alone leads us to eternal happiness and life!

Didn’t Jesus Christ Himself simplify everything for us when He told us which commandments were the most important? First, we must love God with all our heart, our soul, our mind and our strength. Then, we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

We need not make things so complicated that we forget that which matters most in the end.

But before everything else, remember that our love for God should come first. Before we can love others or ourselves properly, we must first be filled with the fullness of His love.

How could we ever pour from an empty cup?

If we don’t find love in God first, we’d seek that love in other people.

The problem is not that we can’t find love in others. The problem is that our thirst for love is so deep it can never be quenched even by our closest family and friends. Not even the love of your spouse can satisfy the emptiness of your soul.

This is where we often falter. Once we expect perfect love from each other, we are bound to be disappointed in the end. For who among us is perfect?

Only God’s love is like that. Only His love satisfies. And with His love, our cups can be filled until they overflow!

Let God surround you with His glory and His love.

Believe in your Divine inheritance. Through Christ, you are invited to the heavenly banquet. In Him, you are of royal blood.

Forget about what people think or say. Consider not what the world deems good. Is there a greater honor than being led to the King?

You are loved by the Mighty One. He died so you may have life. What greater proof should there be that you are cherished and loved?

Your earthly pains are fleeting. Everything is vanity under the sun. Only His countenance endures. Only His heart burns forever!

Be not afraid, O little one. Fear not! Be still and find peace in Him who loves like a mother and who is as gentle as a lamb.

Hear the voice of your beloved, for He calls. Come away and find eternal joy!

“So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13 NABRE

Jocelyn Soriano is the author of the book To Love an Invisible God. “How do we know that God loves us?
