The Lost City– a Spoof that’s Fool Proof

The Lost City– a Spoof that’s Fool Proof March 25, 2022

It rarely if ever happens that a movie gets an 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the recent star-studded spoof, the Lost City has gotten it.  The critics are falling all over themselves to praise this movie, and rightly so. If you are old enough to remember movies from the 80s this one is a take off on Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile and just as enjoyable. Filmed in the Dominican Republic complete with bugs, leeches, snakes, and mosquitos and lush vegetation, this is a thrill ride that involves Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt, and improbably Daniel Radcliffe as the bad guy.  The movie is perfectly paced, and tells the story of a romance novelist who has run out of inspiration, and run out of love in her own life, and simply wants to be left alone.  No more book tours!  For an hour and 38 minutes we enjoy kidnapping, explosions, racing through the jungle, and Brad Pitt, in one sequence as a one man wrecking crew.  This is just pure fun.  The only problem with Brad Pitt’s role as Jack Trainer the rescuer is there is too little of it.

The humor is often deadpan, or predictable but fun. Can our novelist actually find the missing crown of fire from an ancient civilization and get free from the clutches of the bad guy?  Will she ever find true romance again?  And how exactly do you bungle through the jungle in a purple sequined onesy in high heels? Inquiring minds want to know.  This is a movie I would enjoy seeing again when I was a bit down.

One interesting side note. The big explosion that happens as Brad Pitt is helping our heroes escape from the first kidnapping was so enormous, that the look on the actors faces is quite genuine. No one told them they would get that much bang for their buck…… and they did.

There is no bad language, no sex scenes, and nothing to prevent you from taking your older kids to this movie as a family treat. Buy plenty of popcorn, as this is a genuine popcorn treat.
