Did he ponder Isaac
\nWhilst hanging on the cross
\nA last second substitution
\nJust before all was lost? <\/p>\n
Is this why he cried out
\n\u2018My God, My God\u2019 so loud
\nShowing disappointment
\nBefore a hostile crowd?<\/p>\n
Where\u2019s God\u2019s intervention,
\nOffering another lamb
\nOr would He be passed over
\nA dangling great I AM?<\/p>\n
Abandoned but begotten
\nLeft to face his fate?
\nWould help arrive in \u2018nick of time\u2019
\nOr would it come too late?<\/p>\n
Where\u2019s the lamb, asked Isaac
\nAnd told \u2018God will provide\u2019
\nBut Jesus died in plain sight
\nNo place for grace to hide.<\/p>\n
Jesus, like old Isaac
\nAn only begotten son,
\nIsaac was no substitute
\nBut Jesus was the one. <\/p>\n
We like sheep have gone astray
\nUnblemished lambs we\u2019re not
\nGod led the One to slaughter
\nThe Passover he\u2019d begot.<\/p>\n
Offering isn\u2019t \u2018finished\u2019
\nUntil the sacrifice
\nFor any true atonement
\nBlood shed must suffice.<\/p>\n
Behold the Lamb of God
\nWho takes away our sin
\nGod accepts no substitutes
\nFor Jesus, in the end.<\/p>\n
Anyone who says he fully understands what happened to Jesus on the cross has just made very clear that he or she does not fully understand it. The truth about Jesus\u2019s death on the cross, is not so easily nailed down\u2014 so to speak. For one thing, there are so many different angles to this death. On the one hand, from the point of view of Roman Law, there was no miscarriage of justice. Jesus was indeed guilty of treason, even if he only indirectly claimed to be the King of the Jews. But human laws are one thing, and the mind and Law of God another. From another point of view, Jesus\u2019 death was a human tragedy, his life cut off much too soon, and at the instigation of some of his fellow Jews who should have appreciated his attempts to call God\u2019s people to repentance and preparation for a judgment that did indeed fall on Jerusalem in A.D. 70. This poem is told from Jesus\u2019 point of view, and how he may have thought about his own premature demise. From a theological point one may even ask\u2014 Did Jesus quote Ps. 22.1 because for the first time he was experiencing our alienation from God, one who had never previously experienced separation from the Father? It is interesting that in Mark, this is the only time Jesus addresses God simply as \u2018God\u2019. Then of course there is also the centurion\u2019s viewpoint, portrayed very differently in Mk. 15.39 (which may have originally mean \u2018surely this is a son of the gods\u2019 if it was a pagan observing the noble way Jesus\u2019 died without cursing his executioners or his God), and in Luke we have \u2018surely this was a righteous man\u2019 (Lk. 23.47). What of course is important for us individually, is how we view this death on the cross and what different that singular historical event makes for our lives today.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
