wp-image-16192\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are few bluffs in the coastal part of S.C. but Hopsewee is the Indian word for bluff, and there is one overlooking the Santee river\u2026..and this is the beautiful setting for this house\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2016\/07\/hop4-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16193\" class=\" decorated-link\" because most would access the house on the Santee river\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2016\/07\/hop8.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16196\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/bibleandculture\/files\/2016\/07\/hop8-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"hop8\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16196\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2016\/07\/hop10.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16198\" class=\" wp-image-16199\"><\/a> Rice plantations are rather different from cotton plantations in that they require coastal marshes in South Carolina.<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2016\/07\/hop16.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16201\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2016\/07\/hop16-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"hop16\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16201\"><\/a>  Here is a Gullah house, where some of the slaves stayed. <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/bibleandculture\/files\/2016\/07\/hop14.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16200\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">. No they did not have satellite dishes back then.<br>\nIn fact, this house is so well preserved because after the Civil War the house was abandoned by the slave owners and the land and cottages were given to the now liberated slaves with the provision that they would take care of the house.  In fact the house was unoccupied for 2 sets of 50 or so year periods, according to our guide who herself grew up in this house. This is still a private home, unlike the houses in Bath. Notice the protrusion on the back of the house\u2026..<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2016\/07\/hop24.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16207\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/bibleandculture\/files\/2016\/07\/hop24-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"hop24\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16207\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2016\/07\/hop24-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16208\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2016\/07\/hop24-1-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"hop24\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16208\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But this 1740 home is no ordinary plantation baron\u2019s home. It was the home of Thomas Lynch, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his father would have been as well except for one problem, he had a stroke and couldn\u2019t use his signing hand, which explains the blank space amongst the South Carolina signees.  Notice the second column from the left at the bottom of the document, and note the blank space in it.
