There is an old Polish legend about a very bad old woman who died, and as you
\nwould expect, went to Hell. The story says Hell is a great deep pit, of which you can
\nsee the top from the bottom (I don\u2019t know\u2014haven\u2019t been there). The old woman didn\u2019t
\nlike it and tried to attract the attention of angels flying above at the top. One went to
\nsee what he could do. \u201cHave you ever done a good deed?\u201d he asks. At last she thinks
\nof when she gave a carrot to a beggar. The angel goes away and comes back with the
\ncarrot. If it holds, he can pull her out. Many people cling to her feet and are being
\npulled out with her. She kicks and struggles. At last she shouts, \u201cLet go! You don\u2019t have
\nthis carrot. It\u2019s mine.\u201d At that word \u201cmine\u201d the carrot broke in two and they all fell
\nback down to the bottom of the pit. Let this year not be one of failure but of success
\nwith God, even if it be invisible, because we are not keeping God\u2019s gift to ourselves but
