Was it ever thus, then and there
\nSo no one need ask who, when and where
\nThe stones themselves cried out
\nWith the metal bells
\nThat God was in his heaven
\nThough some were in their hells\u2026<\/p>\n
Did it seem quite fixed, fashioned, formed
\nSo few would dare to query, quibble, quit
\nThe pilgrimage well-trodden
\nUp the Dun Cow Lane
\nTo Cuthbert\u2019s choired cathedral
\nSaints sung the same refrain\u2026<\/p>\n
From holy isle, aisle, I\u2019ll
\nNever look away, askance, above
\nThe coffin that souls carried
\nWith the saint within
\nTold of flesh untainted
\nBy suffering, decay or sin\u2026<\/p>\n
The monks had come chanting, ranting, granting
\nAbsolution\u2019s peace, power, presence
\nThe river that they forded
\nAfforded a new start
\nFor grace was in the water,
\nAnd Spirit in the heart\u2026<\/p>\n
Illuminated Gospel, Godspell, Godspiel
\nGood news traveled first, fast, far
\nAs Bede had long intended
\nThroughout a darkened age
\nThe light would ne\u2019er go out
\nIf shared on Norman stage\u2026<\/p>\n
And so the saints keep coming, drumming, humming
\nThe tune all may hear, fear, revere
\nOf Yesu who cried kingdom
\nAnd miracles awoke
\nFor God was on his earth
\nChrist his Master stroke\u2026<\/p>\n
So let us raise a glass, goblet, chalice
\nTo the Word renewed, returned, reviewed
\nThe lion on the door
\nShall give his Dunelm roar
\nWhen truth comes marching in
\nAnd light is seen once more.<\/p>\n
