$\"\"$ <\/a> On Friday Nights at Snug Harbor, a tiny jazz club in Nola a elderly gentleman shuffles in at 10 p.m. sharp with his band, sometimes a trio, sometimes a quartet to play exactly an hour and a half of wonderful classic jazz.\u00a0\u00a0 The man in question?\u00a0 The patriarch of the whole musical Marsalis family\u2014 Ellis. \u00a0 On Friday last I finally got there to see him,\u00a0 and what an incredible treat it was.\u00a0 I got to sit right on the front row, and ended up being the roadie for the show because Ellis\u2019 son Jason kept dropping his sticks for the vibes he was playing, and I handed them back. \u00a0 At the right you see a picture of Ellis these days, still a force of nature on piano with his large hands and beautiful chording. \u00a0 On this night we got some Duke Ellington,\u00a0 some originals (I especially loved\u00a0 \u2018Homecoming\u2019),\u00a0 some pop standards given a jazz turn\u2014 \u2018If\u2019\u00a0 by David Gates.\u00a0 Ellis told the story of walking into a jazz club in NY and there was \u2018Norton\u2019\u00a0 playing this tune on the piano\u2014\u00a0 that\u2019s right,\u00a0 Art Carney. \u00a0 I was very impressed with the young drummer and older bass player in the quartet, but the star of this show, besides Ellis,\u00a0 was Jason Marsalis the youngest of the clan who is a very talented drummer and producer. But on this night he played vibes to good effect,\u00a0 spicing it up with samples from composers as diverse as Michael Jackson and Stravinsky.\u00a0 These cats know music\u2014 pop, classical, jazz, funk, soul,\u00a0 r+b, you name it\u2014 they jazz it up. \u00a0 I just loved it\u2014 one of the best jazz concerts I have ever attended.<\/p>\n

If you would like to sample Ellis and Jason ouevre, a great place to start is with the CD seen below,\u00a0 which I got the Marsalis\u2019 to sign for me.\u00a0 I got to chat with them for a bit and told them I was from the home of John Coltrane\u2014 High Point N.C.\u00a0 That sparked some interest.\u00a0 I will not soon forget this night\u2014 it was a huge blessing.\u00a0 Thanks to Bob Stewart who made it all happen.<\/p>\n
