<\/a><\/p>\nChris Armitage was my English Lit teacher in 1971-74, who open the treasury of the metaphysical poets, Donne and Herbert, for example (and later Gerard Manley Hopkins), as well as Shakespeare. I owe him a great debt, and now after the longest tenure ever at UNC as a teacher (over 50 years), he is becoming emeritus in status at the university. This is my tribute to him. <\/p>\n

Hommage <\/p>\n
The merit in emeritus
\nIs that you are esteemed,
\nWhile your career went on and on,
\nWas it what you\u2019d dreamed?<\/p>\n
Were your students sometimes brilliant
\nWere your colleagues sometimes friends
\nDid you avoid the politics
\nOr suffer from its ends?<\/p>\n
Did the dullards dislike Shakespeare
\nBored by the bard it seems
\nOr were they just not caring
\nWhat flowed from Avon\u2019s streams?<\/p>\n
Did they dislike metaphysics
\nWere they quickly done with Donne
\nDid they prefer some Herbert
\nThinking he\u2019s the special one?<\/p>\n
Whatever may have happened
\nWhen it comes to your past pupils
\nYou made a large impression
\nAnd even taught some scruples,<\/p>\n
Of how poetry should flow
\nAnd the meter in due measure
\nAnd let the content be sublime,
\nA genuine lasting treasure.<\/p>\n
Somewhere there are some students
\nWho\u2019d still love to learn from you
\nWhile your classes are now over
\nThe class in you shines through.<\/p>\n
