And these shops even had plumbing\u2014 notice the clay pipes on the left.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_121906-1.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50320\" of fast food counter service out of the front of their houses, something you can see several times at Pompeii and Herculaneum.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_121405-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50323\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_121405-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice that there were Jewish men working in shops right next to Gentiles, in close proximity.<\/p>\n<p><a decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50341\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_121051.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice the commode seats\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Also nearby were board games to be played in the plaza\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122157-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50344\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122157-1024x822.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"822\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And at the end of the long plaza was the gymnasium complex where men exercised sans clothes.\u00a0 As I mentioned, this is a reconstructed facade with some minority of pieces that are original\u2026 nevertheless it gives a good feel for what it would have been like in John of Patmos\u2019 day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_Resized_20220721_122112-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50347\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice that the inscriptions are all in Greek, listing various Asiarchs and rulers who were probably patrons of this impressive building complex. Sardis, like Ephesus, was a Greek city, not a Roman colony city.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly this building was right next to one of the most ornate and decorated synagogues anywhere in the first century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_123034-1-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50365\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_123034-1-743x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"743\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally someone got the bright idea to put a protective roof over the synagogue so the mosaics in the floor and elsewhere would not be ruined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_123008-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50368\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_123008-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This happened in the last couple of years.\u00a0 This synagogue is so large it even has a forecourt for Gentile God-fearers and visitors<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122504-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50371\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122504-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice the pool for water, and perhaps even ritual washing of hands and feet.\u00a0 Below we see the scroll cabinet where the Torah would have been kept in the very back of the main part of the synagogue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122708-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50374\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122708-568x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the other end of the building is a reading table to roll out scrolls, which appears to have been repurposed because it seems to be pagan in character, perhaps even originally an altar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_123212-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50377\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_123212-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice the fertility signs on the front (eggs), the temple columns and animal feet\u2026 and on the side an eagle\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_123240-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50380\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_123240-1024x759.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"759\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The main decorative feature on the floors and some on the walls are non-iconic mosaics\u2026 i.e. lacking images of living beings\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122532-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50383\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122532-1024x802.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"802\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122542-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"554\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The one below has a Greek inscription in the middle of it\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a height=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is hardly much of a surprise since Diaspora Jews spoke Greek as their day to day language.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220524_122604-1.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
