Last time I was there they showed me a Brita\u00a0 filter of sorts installed in a villa meant to get out the calcium and other minerals that made the water not very potable. But this was not the only problem for this site\u2014 earthquakes devastated this site again and again in early Christian history and yet the church kept growing and building there\u2026 as we shall see.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220722_095316-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50467\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220722_095316-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>if you are really going to tour this site in the Lycus valley not far from Colossae you\u2019d better put on your walking shoes, as there are some 67 things to see spread out over several miles.\u00a0 This was a town so prosperous they had a morning and an evening theater or stadium, one facing east and one facing west.\u00a0 \u00a0Here a map, the black line shows how to see it all properly, the red a shorter tour, and the other chart lists the items to see.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_092723-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50470\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_092723-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220722_095030-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50473\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220722_095030-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was a major east west street connected to the major east west Roman road that headed to Syria in one direction and Ephesus in the other.\u00a0 We are very fortunate that the archaeologist who lives in nearby Denizli who heads up the considerably ongoing dig here, wanted to show the city in various of its period of existence, including in the Byzantine period, so we have various house churches and basilicas being brought back into view here and the results are impressive.\u00a0 His name is Celal Shimshek, and kudos to him for his major life work here.\u00a0 Let\u2019s start with the streets themselves which are wide and impressive\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_093525-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50476\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_093525-706x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220722_110935-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50722\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220722_110935-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_102005-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50530\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_102005-707x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"707\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_094030-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50479\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_094030-942x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"942\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The huge limestone slabs are still there, though a bit worn down\u2014 as for our roads, they wouldn\u2019t last one one-thousandth as well as theirs did\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_094320-2-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50482\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_094320-2-1024x626.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"626\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Laodicea is built on a plateau surrounded by hills out of which the theaters have been carved.\u00a0 And in the distance across the Lycus valley you can see Hierapolis or modern day Pamukkale with its white limestone cliffs over which water still pours. Hierapolis was the spa town of the area with its hot springs, and still is today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_095259-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50485\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_095259-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are the two theaters, one mostly seats and multiply by ten in which case we are talking about at least 50,000 or more residents when this theater was built, which by ancient standards was a large city.\u00a0 \u00a0The other one looks like this\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_103208-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50494\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_103208-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_103244-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what they find when stuff is first unearthed in some cases..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_100357-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then they have to figure what the original design was\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_093510-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50728\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_093510-1024x725.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"725\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It takes a lot of work to put the pieces back together in such a theater.\u00a0 I want to move on to my favorite new part of the dig which has uncovered the agora or market place and it\u2019s impressive walled structure\u2026\u00a0 This first shot shows a pile of dirt and how much dirt had to be removed in order to uncover this agora.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_110225-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50500\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2022\/11\/thumbnail_20220525_110225-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But of course because this large structure was buried, the color of it was preserved, which today requires a canopy to accomplish the same aim.<\/p>\n<p><a
