Yuliya wanted to show us this church for several reasons\u2013 firstly, she was baptized here, and secondly, it was ecumenical in character, being both Catholic and Orthodox, as the iconography will show.\u00a0 Interestingly, they don\u2019t baptize infants!\u00a0 Weird.\u00a0 The Jerusalem Brotherhood was probably an offshoot of the Knights Templars, which King Louis of France tried to get rid of (see the novel reviewed earlier on this blog\u2013 Realm of Darkness). But this group of brethren who came from Jerusalem to Paris, founded a church which still exists today, and is well worth a visit.<\/p>\n

I challenge you to find another high altar like this one\u2013 with Catholic images, and Orthodox icons, not to mention a menorah!!<\/p>\n

There are beautiful stained glass windows and more icons\u2026.<\/p>\n

Yes in the Orthodox tradition John the Baptizer is turned into a Christian.\u00a0 And below we have Mary, called \u2018the theotokos\u2019 or God-bearer in the Greek Orthodox tradition.<\/p>\n

I like the mixture of modern and traditional stained glass windows.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A traditional high pulpit.\u00a0 Notice no icon screen before the high altar.\u00a0 There only a few sculptures\u2026<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure what to make of this last window, but I\u2019ll guess it has to do with the Jerusalem brothers who founded this church.<\/p>\n

But the window above is interesting, in medieval Latin it quotes Jesus\u2013 \u2018Amen I say to you, you will be with me in Paradise.\u2019<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s once more look down the central aisle from the back, and get some perspective.<\/p>\n
