The entrance way to this underground grave yard or necropolis (which is largely an ancient pagan graveyard\u2026 but see my novel <em>Roma Aeterna<\/em> about the Christian parts of it) is on the outside of the far left side of St. Peter\u2019s near the high altar.  Here are some shots of that side of St. Peter\u2019s (now nicely sandblasted) and the entrance door itself. Note as well the oldest chapel on the grounds nearby\u2014 the Chapel of St. Stephen Martyr.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt1-e1383477836978-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6819\"><\/a>  (Before sandblasting on that side of St. Peters)<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt2-e1383477964199-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6820\"><\/a>  (after sandblasting)<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt3.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt3-e1383478122971-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6821\"><\/a>  (chapel of St. Stephen). <\/p>\n<p>Here is the entrance way to the St. Peter scavi (i.e. ruins)<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt4-e1383478306387-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6822\"><\/a>   The Italian above the door frame reads \u2018Office of Ruins\u2019.  I know plenty of churches that are in ruins but this has got to be the only one that has an office of ruins!<\/p>\n<p>You are not allowed to take pictures down where St. Peter is buried, but there are some monuments from the upper level of the necropolis where pictures are allowed\u2026.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt7.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt7-e1383478508959-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6823\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt8.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt8-e1383478651710-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6824\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a pagan altar also found here.  Bear in mind this was a general burial ground, mostly populated by pagans until folk like Peter were buried here. Then it increasingly became a Christian burial spot.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt9.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt9-e1383478814966-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6825\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a model of the tomb of St. Peter we were allowed to photograph.  What it shows is that the tomb was added to over time, with marble columns added, and that the bones of St. Peter were even moved to a secondary location on the back of the mausoleum itself.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt10.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt10-e1383479134258-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6826\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The two photos below were taken off the net\u2026  here is a schematic of the tomb\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt11.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"216\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6827\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt12.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/crypt12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"195\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6828\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This last picture is of where the bones were moved to. Note the graffiti identifying what is within. This is actually on the backside of the same tomb or mausoleum. <\/p>\n<p>What will be surprising to some is that St. Peter was buried in or near a mausoleum which has am emblem of Sol Invictus on the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cryp13.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cryp13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"290\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6830\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was of course originally an image of Apollos and his chariot riding across the sky.  It came to be an early image of Christ as the risen one ascending into heaven.
