So all the elders\u00a0of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.<\/span>\u00a05\u00a0<\/sup>They said to him, \u201cYou are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king\u00a0to lead us, such as all the other nations\u00a0have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 6\u00a0<\/sup>But when they said, \u201cGive us a king\u00a0to lead us,\u201d this displeased\u00a0Samuel; so he prayed to the\u00a0Lord<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a07\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0Lord<\/span>\u00a0told him: \u201cListen\u00a0to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,\u00a0but they have rejected me as their king.<\/span>\u00a08\u00a0<\/sup>As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking\u00a0me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.<\/span>\u00a09\u00a0<\/sup>Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know\u00a0what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n 10\u00a0<\/sup>Samuel told\u00a0all the words of the\u00a0Lord<\/span>\u00a0to the people who were asking him for a king.<\/span>\u00a011\u00a0<\/sup>He said, \u201cThis is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take\u00a0your sons and make them serve\u00a0with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.<\/span>\u00a012\u00a0<\/sup>Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>13\u00a0<\/sup>He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.<\/span>\u00a014\u00a0<\/sup>He will take the best of your\u00a0fields and vineyards\u00a0and olive groves and give them to his attendants.<\/span>\u00a015\u00a0<\/sup>He will take a tenth\u00a0of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants.<\/span>\u00a016\u00a0<\/sup>Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0and donkeys he will take for his own use.<\/span>\u00a017\u00a0<\/sup>He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.<\/span>\u00a018\u00a0<\/sup>When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the\u00a0Lord<\/span>\u00a0will not answer\u00a0you in that day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
