One of them is the Capitoline Museum, and this post is about that museum and what is in it\u2026. for example the original symbol of Rome\u2013 Romulus and Remus being suckled by a wolf (no, this is not the origin of the recent \u2018Dawn\u2019 werewolf movies). <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap4-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6904\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this beats the replica everyone sees on top of the same hill where the museum is\u2026<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap3.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap3-e1383507644322-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6905\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And while we are talking humans and animals bonding, here is a statue of a warrior in the museum\u2026<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap6.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap6-e1383507747946-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6906\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And while we have the men in unusual poses theme, here\u2019s another one\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap7.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap7-e1383507913362-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6907\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also have big headed Emperors (and which emperor didn\u2019t have a big head), in this case Constantine\u2026with and without lots of hair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap2-e1383508201803-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6909\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap11.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap11-e1383508297128-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6910\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap9.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap9-e1383508427794-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6911\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is perhaps my favorite item in the museum, the famous statue of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius on his horse. And here\u2019s a better look\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap8.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap8-e1383508569776-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6912\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here is a nice relief of the very same person and scene\u2026<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap12.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap12-e1383508688135-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6913\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And while we are on the horse theme, how about a solid marble black horse sculpture..<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap10.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap10-e1383508817342-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6914\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are some nice busts of patrician women\u2026giving some good clues about ancient hair styles.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap13.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap13-e1383508953440-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6915\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap14.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap14-e1383509064187-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6916\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And there are the usual representations of female beauty in marble (When asked what\u2019s in the museum, the response was\u2013 \u2018we have busts of women and women with busts\u2019)<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap151.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap151-e1383509922355-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6922\"><\/a><br>\nWhat you generally do not have is representations of women or men who were busts, or ordinary, or poor.  Sculpture was something only the rich could afford, except occasionally in funerary art\u2026 such as we see here\u2026<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap16.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap16-e1383509448172-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6918\"><\/a>  This is an image of a woman mourning at a gravesite. <\/p>\n<p>Here is a fine sarcophagus\u2014-<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap17.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/cap17-e1383509608611-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6919\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are a variety of great museums in and around the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.
