Today the temple with the hole in the roof is a church, and one of the most visited churches in all of Rome. There are periodic announcements to those milling around in the inside that they should be silent and respect the holiness of the place.  Marcus Agrippa would have agreed, except he built this as a temple to \u2018all gods\u2019 (hence pan- theon) not to the one God of the Bible.  <\/p>\n<p>While I was there last month, a very special visitor showed up\u2013  Bebe Netanyahu and his entourage appeared to see the place.  Yes, that\u2019s the Head Knocker of Israel. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another good shot of the lentil over the door\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan2-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6985\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a shot of the high altar. This church is dedicated to Mary and various female saints.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan3.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan3-e1383527805946-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6986\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan5.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6988\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is the oculus, or eye, or hole in the roof\u2026\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan4-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6987\"><\/a>  Interestingly, this is basically a round building with a square front porch.   <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan6.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6990\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unlike many temples and churches in Rome, this one is in a cramped space. There is not a big square in front of it, and there are narrow streets on either side. It is near the Piazza Navona. <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan7.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"193\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6989\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The building has a certain inherent allure, perhaps in part because its the only pagan temple that\u2019s in this good a shape still today, thanks to the church preserving it for many centuries.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan8.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2013\/11\/pan8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"187\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6991\"><\/a>.
