Being so near the sea, this was undoubtedly a very humid town especially in summer, and so a place where the elites especially were looking for shade, and places to bath.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_122246.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73295\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_122246.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_1222150-1.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73298\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_1222150-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, on the floor of the bath were images from the sea, among other familiar motifs (notice the various means of transportation emphasized, so important to a port city.\u00a0 There were various shrines nearby as well, because the ancients believed that one key to health was keeping clean, and honoring the gods. <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_114327.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73301\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_114327.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_114335.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73304\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_114335.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Libations were one way to honor the dead. Notice the abbreviation on the inscription in the second picture above\u2014 D M, short of dis manibus.\u00a0 This could be translated \u2018to the spirits of the dead\u2019 but also Dis was sometimes a name from the god of the underworld and mani could refer to a hand rather than a spirit, hence into the hands of the god of the underworld.\u00a0 One thing one learns clearly enough is that the ancient were quite religious, not only worshipping pagan gods, but attempt to commune and communicate with the spirits of their dead ancestors.\u00a0 The word used to refer to the spirit of the<em> pater familias<\/em> was \u2018genius\u2019, from which we get the word \u2018genius\u2019 of course.\u00a0 The Romans believed one could become wise by consulting with the spirits of the pater familias especially.\u00a0 \u00a0The latter picture above marks the spot where someone could do a libation in honor of the deceased, or as a petition to a deity.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a nearby family tomb, notice the niches for urns for the ashes of the dead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_100400-1.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73322\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_100400-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_1002480-1.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73325\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_1002480-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_100414-1.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-73328\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2025\/08\/20250529_100414-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"524\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some preferred to be buried in a sarcophagus\u2026.
