One of the surprising features of this small museum that is packed with all sorts of things is the very diversity of those things, for instance quite a lot of Greco-Roman and Egyptian objects, and we will look at them in this and the next post.\u00a0 There are for instance a lot of Roman grave steles, and some urns and sarcophagi as well, for instance the one immediately below.<\/p>\n

Many of these are inscribed with D.M. short for Dis Manibus\u2013 to the spirits of the dead, and then the dedication about the deceased follows.\u00a0 \u00a0You\u00a0 can\u00a0 learn\u00a0 a lot\u00a0 about\u00a0 a culture\u00a0 from\u00a0 their\u00a0 views\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 dead.\u00a0 Basically,\u00a0 they\u00a0 believe\u00a0 those\u00a0 spirits\u00a0 \u00a0are\u00a0 alive\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 afterlife.\u00a0 And\u00a0 sacrifices\u00a0 area\u00a0 appropriate\u00a0 to\u00a0 honor\u00a0 not\u00a0 only\u00a0 the\u00a0 gods\u00a0 but\u00a0 also\u00a0 the\u00a0 dead.<\/p>\n

Notice the hole in the bottom of the sarcophagus to let the rain water out, which means that this one was not buried but like many others was publicly displayed in the open air, sometimes even on top of a mausoleum. Honoring the dead involved preserving their memory by public displays and inscriptions in the Greco-Roman world.\u00a0 This was not the normal traditional Jewish practice which involved burial in a cave or a tomb, and then later gathering the bones and putting them in a labelled ossuary. (during the two centuries before and after Christ).<\/p>\n

Some of the steles are elaborate, some rather simple, depending on what the family could afford.<\/p>\n
