This excavation has really seen some development over the last ten years, including the likely discover of Herod\u2019s own tomb.  But it has also been an ill-fated excavation, as Ehud Netzer, the famous archaeologist who dug the site, and publicized in 2007 that he had found Herod\u2019s tomb, died at the site in 2010 at age 76, from a tragic fall.  The site is definitely well worth the visit for a variety of reasons, and its new signs help show why.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8750\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Herodium is an artificial hill, made higher by shaving off the top of two nearby one\u2019s to make the one hill the tallest in all of Judea (from which you can see both Jerusalem and the Dead Sea). Herod had enemies\u2026. lots of enemies, most of them Jews.<br>\nHe was of course only part Jewish, and part Idumean.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero11.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero11-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8760\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/her3b.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/her3b-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8764\"><\/a><br>\nif one of those things hits you, you are done. <\/p>\n<p>The new things to see are: 1) the tunnel and underground water cistern; and 2) the tomb of Herod.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the entrance way to the tunnel system, and the explanation of it.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/her12a.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/her12a-e1403274004236-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8762\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero13.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero13-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8763\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The cistern itself is quite impressive\u2026<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero14.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero14-e1403274486315-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8765\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero14a.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/hero14a-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8766\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What one really wants to see is the tomb complex, but it is still being reconstructed and restored. The net effect of visiting places like Masada and the Herodium, is that you realize just how very paranoid Herod was, and so it is ever so believable that he might slaughter some innocents in the backyard of the Herodian, in order to make sure no one interfered in the present of future with his reign.
