You can also see in the picture the now famous underground walkway from the pool of Siloam at the bottom of the picture all the way up to the Temple Mount itself.  It was once a street above ground as shown in this recreation drawing.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd1-e1403306421287-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8851\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what it looks like today\u2014<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/20140519_144906.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/20140519_144906-e1403306624432-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8852\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is that area between the Temple Mount and the bottom of the Kidron valley where it meets the Hinnom valley at and below the Pool of Siloam that we will be exploring in this post, an adventure that consumed our last half day in Jerusalem. <\/p>\n<p>Our first picture is a timely reminder.  What is now the privately owned and run City of David Park once was Palestinian land entirely, and one is reminded of this by simply looking across the way as one descends the stairs in the park\u2014 and there are the small Palestinian houses of Silwan, on the west slope of the Mt. of Olives\u2026.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd3jpg.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd3jpg-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8853\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd4.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd4-e1403307310431-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8854\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What one first sees is a bunch of shops and partial houses\u2026.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/Cd5.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/Cd5-e1403307486999-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8855\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd7.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd7-e1403308367109-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8859\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd8.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd8-e1403308514874-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8860\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cda.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cda-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8861\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the remains of what was found in the so-called burnt house can be seen in the burnt house museum, one of the original parts of this dig was this stone wall looking structure on the west side of the dig, abutting the modern street  and houses above.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd9a.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd9a-e1403308951908-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8862\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Was this the so-called Milo?  What part of the Ophel was one looking at?  As it turned out part of this structure was part of the royal palace it appears\u2026.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd11.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd11-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8863\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd9.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd9-e1403309353985-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8864\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd12.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd12-e1403309571882-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8865\"><\/a>  Possibly an ornately decorated royal quarters\u2026<br>\nwas it from here that David saw Bathsheba?<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/12a.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/12a-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8866\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From here we entered the netherworld of the underground water system, first Warren\u2019s shaft, and then Hezekiah\u2019s tunnel leading to the Pool of Siloam, old and new.  As at Megiddo, there had to be drilling under the city walls and out to the Pool, so water could be supplied back to the inside of the city, even if under attack.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd14.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd14-e1403310210461-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8868\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Going through Warren\u2019s Shaft these days is a surreal experience, literally. They use blue lights, and show you a movie in the middle of the cave as you descend down the shaft. We hurried by the one group watching the film mesmerized by the blue light, and got to be the leaders of the pack for going through Hezekiah\u2019s tunnel\u2026 it was a good decision.  Nobody in front of us, and nobody pushing us.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd15.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd15-e1403310457531-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8869\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what the tunnel itself looks like, a marvel of ancient engineering with two groups of worker chiseling away from opposite ends of the spectrum and meeting in the middle. The story is partially told in 2 Kngs. 20.20 and 2 Chron. 32, but there is a famous inscription, now residing in the Istanbul Museum, which we will come to when we get there, telling the tale of the completion of this marvel.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/Israel-Jerusalem-City-of-David-Hezekiahs-Tunnel-curve.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/Israel-Jerusalem-City-of-David-Hezekiahs-Tunnel-curve-e1403310707976-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8870\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The water can get as high as thigh high, and the ceiling as low as about 5 feet, but its fun to wade through the cool water on down the hill to the pool, but you need a little light. Jewish families do this walk sometimes with candles, singing the songs of Zion in Hebrew. It\u2019s a great experience.  And guess who emerged first of our group from the tunnel\u2026.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/Israel-Jerusalem-City-of-David-Hezekiahs-Tunnel-Yuliya.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/Israel-Jerusalem-City-of-David-Hezekiahs-Tunnel-Yuliya-665x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"665\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8871\"><\/a><br>\nYep it\u2019s that Yuliya again!<br>\n The modern end of the tunnel comes into a pool, which turns out to be above the ancient pool of Siloam, here\u2019s the description\u2026<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd17.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd17-e1403311048435-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8872\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd18.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd18-e1403311210935-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8873\"><\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/Israel-Jerusalem-City-of-David-Hezekiahs-Tunnel-exit-aerial-view.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/Israel-Jerusalem-City-of-David-Hezekiahs-Tunnel-exit-aerial-view-693x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"693\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8874\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Guess what they were selling at the end of the tunnel\u2014 yep T shirts saying \u2018I survived Hezekiah\u2019s tunnel\u2019 a must have for me.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd19.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/55\/2014\/06\/cd19-e1403311462550-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8875\"><\/a><br>\nAs for the ancient pool of Siloam where the blind man of John 9 went, Ronny Reich supervised the dig for many years, with excellent results.
